A year has passed since Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old American peace activist from Olympia, was killed by an Israeli army bulldozer while nonviolently trying to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian house in the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip

On this anniversary, Congressman Kucinich offered the following words: “Rachel's life and her memory should remind us of the vast potential of the human heart to seek peace -- no matter what the challenges, no matter what the cost. On this day, when we remember her sacrifice, we should also celebrate her courage, her strength, and her commitment to the principles that we cherish. Her family and friends are in our hearts and in our prayers.”

Rachel Corrie was killed by Israel's illegal wall

A year has passed since Rachel Corrie, a 23-year-old American peace activist from Olympia, was killed by an Israeli army bulldozer while nonviolently trying to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian house in the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli government has refused to release its entire June 2003 military police investigation report to the United States but continues to claim that her death was simply an "unfortunate accident," despite the testimony of six eyewitnesses who claim that Corrie, with her bright orange jacket, was clearly visible to the bulldozer drivers, and that the bulldozer lifted her up and drove over her repeatedly with its plow down.

It is no wonder that the Corrie family is urging Congress to pass House Concurrent Resolution 111, which calls upon the "United States government to undertake a full, fair, and expeditious investigation into the death of Rachel Corrie."

Yet, while questions remain about the details of her death, there should be no question about its ultimate cause. Corrie was killed by Israel's wall.

So far I've seen no one in this thread, or any of the other threads talking about Corrie, refer to her as a saint except her detractors. Just because you didn't agree with her politics, just because she actually saw Plestinians as people, with the same inherent value as anyone else, doesn't mean her life was without worth. It doesn't mean she deserved to have what happened to her happen.

I haven't paid a hell of a lot of attention to all the details of this incident, as it's seems to be so polarizing, and the 'facts' seem to change depending on who you listen to, but it's sickening to see how easily people accept and even relish the death of someone simply because they didn't agree with them. How easily they're willing to accept cursory explainations and investigations into an incident when the victim is someone they did not like.

I know the mods here, and worked with them in the past. I do not believe they are biased. I think they have a horribly difficult job to do here, but I trust they do their best.

Actually, no you can't.

The comments made and the behavior exhibited concerning the anniversary of Rachel Corrie's death illustrates many different and extreme stereotypes and assumptions people have about the I/P situation and the forum participants here on this board.

As for the issue of "taste" and insensitivity, I can assure you that there is much to go around on both sides.

And both of which are extremely incensed at the insensitivity of the other. The differences are very much front and center with your assumptions about who Rachel Corrie was and how you feel she died.

There is one group which feels that she was slain in the line of duty defending a people she believed in. Martyred if you will. As such they are marking the anniversary in her death as a way to celebrate their cause.

There is a second group which feels that her death was an accident caused in no small degree by her own doing. There is a good deal of outrage from this group that the attention paid to her and the claims about the culpability of her death are obscene and out of proportion and this disrespectful to the deaths of others who they feel are far more innocent.

Both are legitimate, and yet both are one-sided and insensitive. Both also are indicative of the real problem, which btw, are not the rules. If either group had their way there would be no dialogue. To me this is the real travesty to the situation.

P.S.

The insensitive jokes should have been pulled. Please alert if we missed a few.

I just read yr description of those two groups, and I don't fall into either. I honestly don't know if Rachel Corrie was murdered or if it was an accident, though it appears that to some in the second group, anyone pointing out that there should be an independent and transparent investigation into her death are somehow putting her up on a pedestal and worshipping her....

What wasn't mentioned in yr post was that this second group may well be outraged, but each and every time they're asked to provide any shread of evidence of their repeated claims of her being a terrorist supporter, etc, no evidence eventuates and all that happens is the same unfounded accusations get repeated about a zillion times over...

The unrelenting hatred shown towards her after her death is of a scale not even shown towards suicide-bombers or those who plan the bombings. And that hatred is what's insensitive, Lithos. There's nothing insensitive about people believing she was murdered. There is also nothing legitimate about a view that paints someone as a supporter of terrorism without any evidence at all. There's also nothing legitimate about holding a view where ANY discussion of the circumstances of Rachel Corrie's death should try to be stifled on some flimsy pretext that if we're not wailing about victims of suicide bombings 24/7, then we're not showing a respect for the dead....

And to me, as someone who doesn't fall into either group, the hatred shown towards Rachel Corrie has been nothing short of disgusting. There's no justification at all for it...
