26.02.04 AMCO's safely transfered from Nitzan to other Civilian Jails The five anti-occupation conscientious objectors, Noam Bahat, Adam Maor, Haggai Matar, Shimri Tzameret and Matan Kaminer, were sent to the notorious Nitzan prison last Sunday, February 22, 2004. Nitzan is the processing center for all incoming prisoners. As often happens, conditions at a site for temporary detention are noticeably worse than those at any of the 'regular' prisons. Young first offenders are thrown into overcrowded cells for 23 hours a day – with an hour a day for exercise in the courtyard – with hardened criminals. All of our supporters were duly concerned and understood the need to prevent the distinct probability of an extended stay in Nitzan. After the intervention of a number of Knesset members, attorneys for the five, and a flood of phone calls, the Prison System Authorities expedited the transfer of the five on Wednesday evening, February 25 and Thursday morning, February 26, 2004. Matan Kaminer, Noam Bahat and Haggai Matar were safely transferred To Massiyahu Prison near Ramle while Shimri Tzameret and Adam Maor were safely transferred to the Hermon Prison, near the town of Merar, in the lower Galilee. According to messages received from the five, the transfer was orderly and in accordance with standard procedures. The parents and the five's supporters breathed a sigh of relief and prepared to renew the main battle to free the five.. .
23.02.04 AM UPDATE - The 5 (male) COs are currently in the worst Israeli Civilian Jail The five were sent seperately to the Nizan (Ramle) Jail were they are being held in the 'Closed Branch'. This means they are in cells built for 4 but containing 7 prisoners - some of whom sleep on the floor. They are allowed out of the cell for 1 hour in every 24. We do not know for how long this regime will continue. They may get a lawyer's visit to day. At this time we still do not know what has happened to two of the five COs. .
23.02.04UPDATE - Laura has been sentenced to 14 days in Military detention. We have no further information about her at present: however it looks as if she is starting the standard army routine - repeated short detentions to check if the CO will break easily or can be got out on psychiatric grounds - then follow up with longer sentences later. .
22.02.04 The 5 (male) COs are being transfered today from Military Prison #6 to Civilian jail . We have no news as yet in which jail they will end up - but they probably will pass through Ramle Jail sometime today. Will update as soon as we have further news. .
22.02.04Laura is probably in detention by now She entered the enlistment center at 8:00 where she was to report that she would NOT enlist in the IDF - she was accompanied by about 40 demonstrators (Parents Forum, Profile Hadash, Yesh Gvul) , her own parents and friends. It is to be assumed that she is by now (10:00) under detention - this ordeal she will be facing alone. .
