Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas acknowledged Monday in a meeting with US Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) that PA Chairman Yasser Arafat is undermining his authority.

McCain, who led a bipartisan delegation of senators and congressmen to Israel and the Palestinian areas, recounted his exchange with Abbas in an interview with The Jerusalem Post editorial board.

"The thing I said is, 'Arafat is undermining you every way he can.' He said, 'that's right,'" McCain recalled.

McCain then asked Abbas about press reports, which say he has no authority over the Palestinian security forces. Again Abbas said, "that's right," and added that he has made bringing them under his control a top priority.

"He didn't say it, but I had the distinct impression that he doesn't feel that he's strong enough to take (the terrorist groups) on."

McCain, who met Abbas in Ramallah, said he was surprised that the West Bank city "didn't look that bad."

This week McCain and his delegation travel to Iraq to assess the US-led reconstruction efforts and the needs of the US military.

2. It was obvious months ago that Arafat was undermining Abu Mazen
This was patently clear when Arafat refused to disband the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade. Mazen relented because he was fearful of a Palestinian civil war. A civil war is inevitable!
