Israeli newspapers are reporting the pending resignation of the Arab “Palestinian” Prime Minister.
Ha’aretz reported online late Friday that Ahmed Qurei had prepared a resignation letter; Ma’ariv said the entire Palestinian Cabinet would resign next week and return its powers to Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat. Such resignations would be a signal of Palestinian rejection of President George W. Bush’s recognition of some Israeli claims to the disputed territories of Judea & Samaria (wrongly called “West Bank”) and his rejection of a right of Arab “Palestinian” refugees to return to Israel.
The rumor of resignation comes on the heels of a discussion between U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia.
Colin Powell spoke with the Arab “Palestinian” Prime Minister about U.S. backing for Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza. The U.S. secretary of state has been canvassing Arab leaders to explain last week’s U.S. declaration of support for some Israeli claims to the disputed territories of Judea & Samaria (wrongly called “West Bank”) in exchange for Israel’s withdrawal.
State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said, and he called Ahmed Qurei on Friday morning. “The secretary emphasized the importance of moving forward,” Boucher said. “We know they have concerns about some of the positions that were discussed and announced.”.....
