Soldiers from the IDF's elite Duvdevan unit operating in Ramallah Thursday night arrested Hamas member Ramzi Barash, who has been wanted in connection with the February 2002 murder of an Israeli citizen. 22 other Palestinians were arrested by security forces overnight and six suicide bombing attacks have been thwarted since the beginning of June, raising the question whether Israel is winning the war on suicide bombers.
Barash, 26, and other terror operatives reportedly planned the attack in Jerusalem's Atarot industrial zone in which Gadi Rejwan, 34, was murdered. According to security officials, Barash carried out an advanced tour of Rejwan's factory and also secured the entrance when a Palestinian gunman entered to kill Rejwan.
Barash was also suspected of involvement in suicide bombings in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, and shooting attacks in Ramallah area, Army Radio reported. He had successfully managed to avoid arrest for over two years, but intelligence reports indicated that he was to be wed last night.
According to media reports, troops surrounded the Ramallah hall and used loudspeakers to call on Barash to surrender. Two other Hamas men, whom troops had not expected to be at the wedding, came out and turned themselves over as well, after they apparently realized that the army intended to carry out meticulous checks of all those present.
