B’Tselem: “Army killed 182 minors in 2004”

The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories published a report on Wednesday which revealed that Israeli soldiers have killed 182 Palestinian minors in 2004.

The B’Tselem report also revealed that during 2004, Israeli soldiers demolished 1,538 homes, among them 181 homes demolished as a means of collective punishment, and 1,357 for security reasons, according to the military claims.

According to the data collected by B’Tselem, there are 55 permanent checkpoints in the West Bank, 17 are checkpoints erected between Palestinian cities, 27 control movement between the occupied territories and Israel, including 10 checkpoints around Jerusalem, and 13 are checkpoints which restrict Palestinian movement within the West Bank.

Detainees:

B’Tselem revealed that 5,794 Palestinians, including 373 minors are currently in Israeli detention camps and prisons, among them 863 detainees being held in administrative detention without any charges.

Those in administrative detention are often held for six-month stretches with no charge or trial, and, at the end of the six-month period, may have their administrative detention renewed for another six months.

Some have been imprisoned for years in administrative detention without ever having a trial or even charges brought against them.

Generally, Israeli Prison Authorities inform the detainees of the renewal of their administrative detention order one day before their scheduled day of release.

7. I always have the same questions when I see these figures.

Because the numbers never say who did the killing: X Palestinians killed during the intifada ... by whom? Passives are a bear, no?

--How many Palestinians (in this case kids) were targeted by Palestinians (i.e., killed intentionally)?
--How many Palestinians (in this case, kids) were killed by errant munitions from these Palestinian gunmen that the IDF so frequently is reported to be fighting with?
--How many Palestinians (in this case, kids) were killed by errant munitions fired by the IDF?
--How many Palestinians (in this case, kids) not carrying weapons were killed when targeted by the IDF?
--How many Palestinians (in this case, kids) were carrying weapons were killed when targeted by the IDF?

After all, these deaths aren't equivalent as far as blame and responsibility go.

And, yes, when I hear the numbers of Israelis killed, I ask the same questions. And get the same lack of answers.

Suggest that a bit over half the Arab Palestinians killed by Israeli forces are combatants by reasonable definition, and that a bit less than a quarter of thr Israelis killed by Arab Palestinian militias are combatants. Roughly a tenth of the Arab Palestinians dead as a result of the current violence are killed by other Arab Palestinians. The number of persons under the age of twelve are in roughly the same proportion to overall casualties on both sides, and a very small proportion of those totals, no more than a twentieth. The disparity comes among teen-agers, an unfortunate proportion of whom, among the Arab Palestinian casualties, actually are combatants, and a distressing number of whom are merely fools enaged in the taunting of maddenned young men with guns in their hands.

9. Thank you, kind sir; while,

the overall trend of the asymmetries are known to me, I am forever forgetting details. Age takes its toll, as does jet lag.

Partly I asked because I would like to know numbers more precise than I could recall.

But I also asked because so many do not desire to acknowledge that not all deaths should bear equally on the Israeli government's collective conscience, if a conscience can be collective. While I'm sure that there is no way of knowing the precise numbers of non-combatant Palestinians killed by IDF forces by accident, versus by intent, such a question needs to be raised from time to time. And this seemed just such a time.
