RAMALLAH, West Bank - The new Palestinian leadership on Thursday banned civilians from carrying weapons and indicated it will appoint a new security minister known for his tough stance against militants — clear signs of seriousness about reining in violence, an Israeli precondition for peace talks.

Hmm since I havent read the article, and probably even if I did read it, it probably is lacking in the specifics.

I wouldnt have any problem with any government disarming violent felons, but I think in general banning all civillian rights to firearms is wrong, which is not to that it is the case here, but they are certainly restricting some civillian firearm rights.

In Texas it is legal to carry openly a loaded longarm. So if this was proposed here it would be a restriction, however I'm guessing this would be considered a "normal" restriction in many other US States.

1. This is a brilliant move

on Abbas' part.

You can keep your weapons, but don't have them in public.

This allows the average citizen to feel safer, and removes most of the ambiguity between Palestinian police forces (allowed to carry) and militants.

The net result is fewer potential confrontations between the Israelis and Palestinians, more responsibility on the part of the police, and more credibility for Abbas since his citizens feel safer and are happier.

Sounds like results are positive, assuming of course this reporter was not paid by the Bush* Administration.
