Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is planning to authorize more executions of Palestinians who have been sentenced to death, PA officials said on Monday.
With the exception of some Palestinian human rights groups,
many Palestinians expressed support for Sunday's execution of four convicted murderers in the Gaza Strip – the first executions by the PA since 2002.
Hamas and Fatah leaders welcomed the resumption of executions, urging Abbas to endorse more death sentences. The families of some of the victims of the four executed men celebrated the executions by handing out sweets to people on the streets of Gaza City.
"President Abbas is determined to send a strong message to the public that he won't tolerate lawlessness and crime," said a senior Abbas aide. "Soon we will see more executions of convicted murderers and rapists."
Asked if the PA was also planning to execute Palestinians convicted of "collaboration" with Israel, the aide said: "We don't distinguish between one murderer and another.
All those who are on the death row will eventually be executed for their crimes." http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1118629265560&p=1101615860782................................................................
