Militants shun Abbas unity offer

Several Palestinian groups have rejected an offer by President Mahmoud Abbas for them to join a national unity government.

Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine made a counter-proposal for a commitee to oversee Israel's pullout from Gaza.

The BBC's Barbara plett in Jerusalem says the Palestinian Authority's dealings with the militants have deteriorated since Mr Abbas announced the indefinite postponement of parliamentary elections scheduled for July.

Hamas has described Mr Abbas' latest offer as a ploy to avoid commitment to the elections.
