In the latest of a series of violent incidents involving power struggles within the Palestinian Authority, Palestinian gunmen Tuesday severely beat a senior aide to chief PA security official General Nasser Yusef.
The assailants, whose identity is unknown, reportedly opened fire to halt a car carrying PA Ministry of Interior and National Security Director-General Ibrahim Salama on his way from Jerusalem to the West Bank city of Ramallah. He sustained injuries all over his body, and was later hospitalized. His injuries were not life-threatening.
This incident was seen as another in a series of internal attempts within the Authority to depose Yusef, the new Minister of the Interior and Defense, who holds key authority over PA security arms.
There has been much internal confrontation and chaos within the PA Defense Ministry of late, resulting in a number of deaths and serious injuries. These have mostly been due to a lack of trust between Yusef and other senior defense officials, who are said to have defied orders given them by Yusef and by prime-minister Mahmoud Abbas.
