Around 50 protesters, mostly young people from the West Bank, were detained in a confrontation that boded ill for a peaceful emptying of the settlements.
The melee at the entrance to the Neve Dekalim settlement marked the most serious fighting between the authorities and anti-withdrawal activists since the start of Israel's historic withdrawal from Gaza. The pullout, months in the making, was set in motion early Monday with the arrival of Israeli troops bearing eviction notices for the settlers.
