August 17, 2005Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who throughout the day was updated on the developments in Gush Katif, issued a statement shortly after the attack near Shilo sharply condemning the second Jewish terrorist attack within two weeks.
The statement said that Sharon viewed with "utmost gravity this act of Jewish terrorism, which was directed at innocent Palestinians in the warped desire to thereby stop the Disengagement Plan."
The statement said that Sharon directed Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, IDF Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz, Israel Police Commissioner Moshe Karadi and Shin Bet head Yuval Diskin to treat "with utmost seriousness any attempt to attack innocent people."
Housing Minister Isaac Herzog said after the attack that "unfortunately there are crazy elements on the fringes. "
