Reuters: Bush Puts Pressure on Palestinians After Pullout

President George W. Bush demanded on Saturday that the Palestinians respond to the Israeli pullout from Gaza and portions of the
West Bank by cracking down on terrorism.

It was Bush's most direct call for the Palestinians to act against militants since the withdrawal, and the Islamic militant group Hamas responded with defiance by saying it was committed "to the arms of resistance."

Sami Abu Zuhri, spokesman for Hamas, told Reuters Bush's statement was "evidence of the American bias to the Israeli occupation and represents hostility toward the Palestinian people."

"Palestinian resistance is an internal Palestinian affair and Bush ... should stop intervening in Palestinian affairs and should stop exerting pressure that only aims to cause strife among the Palestinian people," he added.



You know, I agree with Zuhri. The US should stop intervening in Palestinian affairs. As such, to comply with his request the first thing we should do is end all financial aid to the Palestinians. Wouldn't want to intervene in their internal affairs would we?

1. I don't think I agree with Zuhri.

I don't live there, and I don't understand all the differences between the Israelis and Palestinians, but it does seem to indicate that Israel was willing to take the first step. Isn't it fair that the other side at least try?

2. we can do this one of two ways.

We can support and guide both sides to a peaceful settlement, or we can withdraw all support from both sides and let Israel work it out (aka regional nuclear war) with its neighbors.

What will not work for us in the medium to long term is to support exploitive and repressive dictatorial governments while also supporting a state that those governments are using as a scapegoat for all their domestic woes, as well as their spiritual crisies.

That sadly is as true of Saudi Arabia as it is of Israel, IMO.

Why not end all the billions of US taxpayers money (and military)aid to Israel as well? After all its used to kill even innocent Palestinian civilians, demolish civilian infrastructure and the further illegal occupation of foreign (=non Israeli) land.
