Paranoid shift
By Michael Hasty
http://www.onlinejournal.com/artman/publish/article_203.shtml

Just before his death, James Jesus Angleton, the legendary chief of counterintelligence at the Central Intelligence Agency, was a bitter man. He felt betrayed by the people he had worked for all his life. In the end, he had come to realize that they were never really interested in American ideals of “freedom” and “democracy.“ They really only wanted “absolute power.”

Angleton told author Joseph Trento that the reason he had gotten the counterintelligence job in the first place was by agreeing not to submit “sixty of Allen Dulles’ closest friends” to a polygraph test concerning their business deals with the Nazis. In his end-of-life despair, Angleton assumed that he would see all his old companions again “in hell.”

The transformation of James Jesus Angleton from an enthusiastic, Ivy League cold warrior, to a bitter old man, is an extreme example of a phenomenon I call a “paranoid shift.” I recognize the phenomenon, because something similar happened to me.

Although I don’t remember ever meeting James Jesus Angleton, I worked at the CIA myself as a low-level clerk as a teenager in the ‘60s. This was at the same time I was beginning to question the government’s actions in Vietnam. In fact, my personal “paranoid shift” probably began with the disillusionment I felt when I realized that the story of American foreign policy was, at the very least, more complicated and darker than I had hitherto been led to believe.

1. Thanks
What a great article.

Just the facts. Evidence and history. How any one could read this and still defend the OCT seems impossible, but surely there are some Bushco supporters who foolishly will keep in lockstep.

2. "Just the facts." LOL
The account of Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld is deliberately exaggerated into falsehood. That's what the paranoid shift does. The actual facts are bad enough. Why exaggerate them?

Bush was seated in the classroom 7 minutes after being told. He may have stayed a little longer, but not 20 minutes. Cheney was doing more than watching television. Check out his account. I think Rumsfeld made it to his desk sometime after the first hit, but what a terrible place for him and Cheney to be -- exactly where someone could have found them! It's after Flight 77 hits the Pentagon that Rumsfeld wanders off and begins to help the clean-up, something that people used to criticize him for. Now HE'S AT HIS DESK WHERE HE CAN BE EASILY LOCATED, IT'S A PLOT!

I am faced with this question. Do you see the strong disconnect in your final response?? The "attack my motives" followed by the "OCT supporter" disconnect.... does it make you feel silly? Does it make you feel better? Does it make you feel functionally illiterate?

Hah. Just asking a question or two. Questions that for some reason can't or won't be answered. Simple questions. To the point questions. If there is any functional illiteracy it is those that read the questions and evade answering those questions.

As to me feeling better.... when Bushco is just history, and the full story comes out, then I will be happy, and anyone trying to keep me from that happiness gets my undying scorn.

Are you, achtung, a supporter of the OCT? I can't seem to find any these days.

You don't see the evasion on your part? You decline to provide your definition of "OCT" so I know what I'm answering. Sweet... it's a plastic (i.e. malleable) expression, open to your (or my) interpretation.

However, just to roll the ball along, yes I believe actual physical aircraft loaded with real physical people, were hijacked and crashed causing enormous damage and significant loss of life.

8. No.
Bush sat there until the lesson was finished. He lingered a bit but didn't take any questions there. (Remember Ari's sign?) Then he went to a classroom that was set up as a temporary office for him. That's where he jotted down a few remarks that he then gave at 9:30. He was not in the classroom the entire time.

You can have your own opinion. You can't have your own facts.

18. When Did Bush Leave?
This comes from an article I write with Paul Thompson:
http://www.historycommons.org/essay.jsp?article=essayaninterestingday

When Did Bush Leave the Classroom?

Nearly every news account fails to mention when Bush left the classroom after being told America was under attack. Three mention 9:12 a.m. (New York Times, 9/16/01 (B), Telegraph, 12/16/01, Daily Mail, 9/8/02) Remaining in the classroom for approximately five to seven minutes is inexcusable, but the video of Bush in the classroom suggests he stayed longer than that. The video contains several edits and ends before Bush leaves the room, so it also doesn’t tell us exactly how long he stayed. One newspaper suggested he remained “for eight or nine minutes” — sometime between 9:13 and 9:16, since Card’s arrival is uncertain. (Tampa Tribune, 9/1/02)

When Bush finally did leave, he didn’t act like a man in a hurry. In fact, he was described as “openly stretching out the moment.” (Fighting Back: The War on Terrorism—From Inside the Bush White House, by Bill Sammon, 10/02, p. 89) When the lesson was over, Bush said to the children: “Hoo! These are great readers. Very impressive! Thank you all so much for showing me your reading skills. I bet they practice too. Don’t you? Reading more than they watch TV? Anybody do that? Read more than you watch TV? (Hands go up) Oh that’s great! Very good. Very important to practice! Thanks for having me. Very impressed.” (Transcribed from Booker video, Fighting Back: The War on Terrorism—From Inside the Bush White House, by Bill Sammon, 10/02, pp. 89-90) Bush still continued to talk, advising the children to stay in school and be good citizens. (Tampa Tribune, 9/1/02, St. Petersburg Times, 9/8/02 (B)) One student asked Bush a question, and he gave a quick response on his education policy. (New York Post, 9/12/02)

The only source to describe what happened next is Fighting Back by Bill Sammon. Publishers Weekly described Sammon’s book as an “inside account of the Bush administration’s reaction to 9-11 (and) a breathless, highly complimentary portrait of the president (showing) the great merit and unwavering moral vision of his inner circle.” (Publisher’s Weekly, 10/15/02) Sammon’s conservative perspective makes his account of Bush’s behavior at the end of the photo-op all the more surprising. Bush is described as smiling and chatting with the children “as if he didn’t have a care in the world” and “in the most relaxed manner imaginable.” White House aide Gordon Johndroe, then came in as he usually does at the end of press conferences, and said, “Thank you, press. If you could step out the door we came in, please.” A reporter then asked, “Mr. President, are you aware of the reports of the plane crash in New York? Is there anything…,” But Bush interrupted, and no doubt recalling his order, “DON’T SAY ANYTHING YET,” Bush responded, “I’ll talk about it later.” But still the president did not leave. “He stepped forward and shook hands with (classroom teacher) Daniels, slipping his left hand behind her in another photo-op pose. He was taking his good old time.… Bush lingered until the press was gone.” (Fighting Back: The War on Terrorism—From Inside the Bush White House, by Bill Sammon, 10/02, p. 90)

Think about that: rather than rush out of the room at the first chance, Bush actually stayed until after all the dozens of reporters had left! Having just been told of a Pearl Harbor-type attack on US soil, Bush was indeed “openly stretching out the moment.” But he still wasn’t done. Bush then turned to principal Tose-Rigell, who was waiting to take him to the library for his speech on education. He explained to her about the terror attacks and why he had to leave. (Fighting Back: The War on Terrorism—From Inside the Bush White House, by Bill Sammon, 10/02, p. 90) Finally, he went to an empty classroom next door where his staff was based. (ABC News, 9/11/02) Given that Bush’s program was supposed to end at 9:20, he left the classroom only a couple of minutes earlier than planned, if even that. (Sarasota Herald-Tribune, 9/16/01)

******

... smiling and chatting with the children “as if he didn’t have a care in the world” and “in the most relaxed manner imaginable" and “openly stretching out the moment” and "He was taking his good old time"

And that is from a conservative observer!

And Bush most certainly DID take questions -- one from a kid and one from a reporter, then he also spoke with the teacher.

How did his ratings shoot up?

Because the media totally ignored the fact.
Much like most of the other odd things that happened, the media just simply wasn't interested or willfully ignored those items. And, it has been said, most of the OCT comes from that same media.

Imagine the media showing bush sitting there for minutes as much as they showed Deans scream.

Of course, someone anthraxed some of the media. Maybe they were scared shitless?

they prefer to concentrate on individual instruments in the symphony, dwelling on single phrases or notes (No, Bush didn't spend 20 minutes...). The big picture is never considered, it's too troubling. They instead snipe at details of an incomplete record, hoping that will obscure a truth too horrible to acknowledge.

When people lambast the well-deserving Bush Adminstration with the facts, I love it.

When people use half-truth and factual inaccuracies to attack the Bush Adminstration, it makes everyone who attacks the Bush Adminstration look bad.

More facts, evidence, and logical arguments, please, for the sake of the big picture -- i.e., getting something done. We'll never get anywhere being wrong about the Bush Adminstration. After all, there are so many real reasons to stand in their way and oppose what they did. Why make up silly reasons to do so?

I bet its in the thousands.

That the US intelligence community received numerous warnings, from multiple sources, throughout the summer of 2001, that a major terrorist attack on American interests was imminent; that, according to the chair of the “independent” 9/11 commission, the attacks “could have and should have been prevented,” and according to a Senate Intelligence Committee member, “All the dots were connected;” that the White House has verified George W Bush’s personal knowledge, as of August 6, 2001, that these terrorist attacks might be domestic and might involve hijacked airliners; that, in the summer of 2001, at the insistence of the American Secret Service, anti-aircraft ordnance was installed around the city of Genoa, Italy, to defend against a possible terrorist suicide attack, by aircraft, against George W Bush, who was attending the economic summit there; and that George W Bush has nevertheless regaled audiences with his first thought upon seeing the “first” plane hit the World Trade Center, which was: “What a terrible pilot,” is not “theory.” It’s fact.

That, on the morning of September 11, 2001: standard procedures and policies at the nation’s air defense and aviation bureaucracies were ignored, and communications were delayed; the black boxes of the planes that hit the WTC were destroyed, but hijacker Mohammed Atta’s passport was found in pristine condition; high-ranking Pentagon officers had cancelled their commercial flight plans for that morning; George H.W. Bush was meeting in Washington with representatives of Osama bin Laden’s family, and other investors in the world’s largest private equity firm, the Carlyle Group; the CIA was conducting a previously-scheduled mock exercise of an airliner hitting the Pentagon; the chairs of both the House and Senate Intelligence Committees were having breakfast with the chief of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, who resigned a week later on suspicion of involvement in the 9/11 attacks; and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the United States sat in a second grade classroom for 20 minutes after hearing that a second plane had struck the towers, listening to children read a story about a goat, is not “theoretical.” These are facts.

That the Bush administration has desperately fought every attempt to independently investigate the events of 9/11, is not a “theory.”

Nor, finally, is it in any way a “theory” that the one, single name that can be directly linked to the Third Reich, the US military industrial complex, Skull and Bones, Eastern Establishment good ol’ boys, the Illuminati, Big Texas Oil, the Bay of Pigs, the Miami Cubans, the Mafia, the FBI, the JFK assassination, the New World Order, Watergate, the Republican National Committee, Eastern European fascists, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission, the United Nations, CIA headquarters, the October Surprise, the Iran/Contra scandal, Inslaw, the Christic Institute, Manuel Noriega, drug-running “freedom fighters” and death squads, Iraqgate, Saddam Hussein, weapons of mass destruction, the blood of innocents, the savings and loan crash, the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, the “Octopus,” the “Enterprise,” the Afghan mujaheddin, the War on Drugs, Mena (Arkansas), Whitewater, Sun Myung Moon, the Carlyle Group, Osama bin Laden and the Saudi royal family, David Rockefeller, Henry Kissinger, and the presidency and vice-presidency of the United States, is: George Herbert Walker Bush.

“Theory?” To the contrary.

It is a well-documented, tragic and -- especially if you’re paranoid -- terrifying fact.

Frustrating as hell. The other thing that put Bushco into position where it could do the damage it did: Electronic Voting Machines was mishandled as well, but the truth finally did overcome, but only after many tombstones of people who's passions against what Bushco did were deemed unacceptable.

And this post will probably be treated much the same way.

39. Probably because of rule #4
I imagine it makes it easier for the moderators if they apply a blanket standard.
Could have been a mistake.

The correct way to ask this question would of course to PM the moderator involved with a polite rules question.

50. Because this article kicks ass perhaps?
although I tried to present this article in the most interesting and thought provoking way and the mods or mod..... felt a need to call the shots on how it was presented. I will do my best to overcome the emotional devastation and once again Kick this in hopes people will read it and wake the fuck up.

I think that article beautifully summed up what is in the back of the minds of many Americans. That is the informed Americans...
