if you look at when he gets up at about :58, you can see his torso is being pulled up and his legs flounder underneath him until he gets his footing. Similarly when he falls, at about :47, notice how his body jerks forward right before he goes full on all fours. In both cases, it should be apparent that some other force than gravity is acting on his body. That would be the wires suspending him from his back that are helping him to portray the low gravity effect.

second, I'm sure they had some material they could use to mimic the moon "powder" on the earth.

The key here still is the astronauts movements. He should only weigh about 60 pounds with the equipment. Why is he having such a hard time keeping his balance and getting up? He should be easily bouncing up, and he shouldn't fall over so easily.

From the time you were about 18 months old and were cruising the furniture, all of your reflexes have tuned themselves to attempting to maintain equilibrium during locomotion in earth gravity.

What does weight have to do with ability to maintain balance? If your weight suddenly changes, you are going to have a hard time keeping your balance, since your muscles have long been trained to provide corrective action for your weight in this environment.

Your notion of what "should" happen or what things "should" look like means utterly nothing.

Also, that falling powder contains more information in it than you think. Just for kicks, the other day I timed the "feather and hammer" drop from Apollo 15. Within a given range of accuracy, do you want to know what g works out to be?

You ignore evidence staring you right in the face that tells you things about the atmosphere and gravity in these videos. Consistently.

1) not sure what your argument is regarding the suits. If they are stiff and heavy, that would dampen the effect of the lower gravity, which would mean less of a problem.

2) they would be about 3 times stronger on the moon, with the suit and backpack (~60 pounds {~360 pounds weight of body plus suit divided by 6} vs ~180 pounds on earth). While they don't really act like that at all in terms of their range of motions, neither do they show any problems moving around and maintaining balance in general, in other videos.

3) lower gravity does not explain how the astronaut's torso pulls up while his feet have difficult getting traction as he gets up.

4) what exactly is your point about the powder? And the feather drop expt could have been faked in many ways.

Also gravity is not simply lower, it is 1/6 of Earths. A good way to think about that is to understand that an Astronaut weighing 200 pounds with his space suit feels like about 33 pounds.

second, your calculation is wrong-- the suit and backpack weigh a lot-- 180 pounds. So the combined weight divided by 1/6 is more like 63 pounds.

And yeah, so we have muscles used to carrying 200 pounds only carrying 63 pounds.
