An ocean exploration team led by Swedish researcher Peter Lindberg has found what some are suggesting is a crashed flying saucer.
Lindberg's team, which has had success in the past recovering sunken ships and cargo, was using sonar to look for the century-old wreck of a ship that went down carrying several cases of a super-rare champagne. Instead, the team discovered what it claims is a mysterious round object that might (or might not) be extraterrestrial.

1. I read about this last week. It sounds pretty interesting, I'm going to follow it

as much as I can. Stories like these fascinate me. As an atheist, I'm a firm believer that this planet was discovered and populated by beings from another planet for some reason or another: they could have been overcrowded and running out of resources, or could have been facing some threat of nuclear annihilation or something like that. The whole magic sky fairy story just doesn't cut it with me.

Postulating that Earth "was discovered and populated by beings from another planet" seems very close to a "magic sky fairy story" to me. How was that planet populated?

I suppose you think that there is strong evidence that this planet in particular was colonized (or whatever). Yes?

Yeah, because scientists carrying out an experiment on a new planet, placing plants, insects and other forms of life in different areas of the planet, then watching how they grow, change and adapt (hint: evolve) to their new climate, atmosphere, surroundings, which ever you wish to call it, sounds very close to some invisible guy snapping his fingers and saying let there be light, let there be water, let there be animals or blowing onto a pile of dirt in his hand and turning it into a man.... You never fail to entertain me, thanks for not letting me down :-)

There isn't much difference between postulating "some invisible guy" and postulating "scientists." It's an intelligent design argument either way -- well, maybe not much of an "argument" at this point. Anyone is bound to wonder: if you appeal to alien scientists to explain life here, then how would you explain the alien scientists?

Science fiction copied from this, and especially Rosewell (1947). Most of those cheesy sci-fi movies came out in the 50's.

As for why we don't use one, the US Air Force has already tried that, mostly in the 50's and 60's. Never got off the ground much.

Presume you're saying that science fiction copied from Roswell -- and not the

otherway around?

Area 51 seems to be the place where all of this stuff is kept -- plus the attempts

to get one of these things flying. Obviously, at the speeds they travel, no human

would be able to take the "ride." The larger ones, perhaps?

Last night, "Ancient Aliens" on History Channel went into its new season --

and reaffirmed that Area 51 also seems to be where experiments might be being carried

out on ETs --

though some who have worked on some of this stuff elsewhere say that they have worked

with ET's to try to understand the way this stuff operates.

13. Why does anyone even think that aliens would appear in any way

even remotely recognizable by us? It seems like it's always something that represents either an extremely advanced form of humanly comprehensible technology, or some type of vaguely (or not so vaguely) form of alien "life" with arms, legs, eyes, mouths, etc.

If alien life is out there why should we expect it to assume any form comprehensible to us? :shrug:

Was dismayed at one point to see that the astronauts used to refer to

them as the "Heinz57" -- given at that point they seem to have known of

56 different species of aliens.


However, what I've read more recently is that they possibly are aware

of more than 350 different species!


Right now, however, the urgent problem is Global Warming -- and likely

too late --

except for shutting down the nuclear reactors and getting ahold of the

The other night I heard a scientist (I don't recall his name, Maybe it was Simon Conway Morris ) on TV say that not only are appendages great for locomotion, but having a nervous system culminating in some kind of brain is a good idea too, even if the brain is just a bulblike swelling - and having a head to house the brain is a pretty good plan as well. Many unrelated (well, okay, distantly related, since we may have all evolved from the same strain of bacteria) animals on Earth have all of these characteristics. I don't think it's implausible to think that some aliens might have these characteristics too. That's not to say they'd look like any animal on Earth, but they could still be recognizable as living beings.

It also might (or might not) be something worth much more than the champagne they were searching for. It doesn't make sense that they'd publish the pic without investigating a little more -- not even one or two more scans?
