The URL was irresistible, because though I can't stand the word "conspiracy," if you google 911 and a variety of other words you will find "911 conspiracy" at about 2,000,000 hits far surpasses 911 and truth, justice or the American way. Sadly.

A Mass Rorschach Test

UNION SQUARE, NEW YORK CITY - A woman moving with the crowds on their way home from work stops short at the subway stairs. Her stature is proud, she has clearly earned her day's paycheck.

"Is that supposed to be a joke?" she asks the two men holding up a stenciled banner that reads, "9/11 Was an Inside Job."

One of the men is the author. "No, we're serious," he tells her. "In a year, you'll probably think the same thing."

She shakes her head and replies in a Latin cadence. "In fifty years, maybe they will tell you what happened." She smiles wistfully and turns to the stairs, leaving the author to wonder whether she realizes her answer suggests a joke altogether different from the one she first implied.

6. The racism argument has been put forth by Ward Churchill; it's worth

considering.

7. It's irrelevant unless grounded in facts.

The question is not, as Churchill and others would have us believe:

"Could brown people commit these complicated acts?"

or

"Would certain brown people feel justified in an act of retaliation against the American leviathan, even one that kills civilians, given the history of US imperialism?"

Notwithstanding the merits of Churchill's arguments for giving a positive answer to both questions, they remain hypotheticals.

Both of the questions already proceed from a conclusion about authorship in advance of inquiry.

The first and only valid question to kick off any consideration of 9/11 is:

"What happened?"
