MADISON -- Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark has picked up an endorsement from one of Wisconsin's major political figures -- Gaylord Nelson.

The former Wisconsin governor and U.S. senator says Clark is "first rate and has the best chance to win."

Nelson -- who founded Earth Day -- also is considered a major figure in the environmental movement. He says he's impressed by Clark's detailed stands on air and water quality issues.


Clark is scheduled to make a campaign swing Saturday through Superior.

He's the only candidate with television ads airing around the state.

The ads began running in Wisconsin's top five TV markets last week and will continue until the Feb. 17 primary.

Clark also is scheduled to attend a forum in Racine on Tuesday that will be moderated by Gov. Doyle.

Clark was give an award for stopping construction on a military base to save an endangered species.Who'd expect that from the military?

has received hundreds of awards. Some of them include:

In 1995 he received the nation's highest civilian award: the Presidential Medal of Freedom. "As the father of Earth Day, he is the grandfather of all that grew out of that event: the Environmental Protection Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act," said the proclamation from President Clinton.

In 1992 the United Nations Environment Programme presented Gaylord Nelson with the Only One World Award.

In 1990 he recieved the Ansel Adams Conservation Award, bestowed upon a federal official who has shown exceptional commitment to the cause of conservation and the fostering of an American land ethic.

I had to go check, because I thought the founder of earth day was John McConnell, who has endorsed Dennis Kucinich.

It turns out they both founded it...sort of. McConnell came up with the idea, name, and original date; the first earth day was March 21, 1971. Planned to coincide with the equinox. The United Nations still celebrates this Earth Day. A different group then held their "earth day" a month later on the April 22 date. Gaylord Nelson made April 22 the "official" American Earth Day.

Two earth days...who knew?

If only humanity lived as if every day were earth day.

...given that one of the original Earth Day organizers and a former chair of the National Earth Day board is running against Clark in this race -- and would have to be hands down the greenest candidate by any objective measure.

15. I was in WI the last 2 weeks,

people are definitely excited about the Clark and Kerry campaigns, at least in northeast WI. Nobody I talked to trusts Dean. They have a lotta lotta lotta questions about him. I don't think Dean will sweep the midwest as easily as many people think he will.

Nelson is a great man, respected by many. This is good news for Clark and congrats to him. I think the Feingold (this one will be last though, he's up for reelection), Kohl (all will be courting him. he's got power.) and Gov. Doyle (barely won, not really a truly tried and tested leader of the state party, though I'm unfamiliar with him). endorsements will definitely outweigh this one.

17. According to our Lt. Gov, Barbara Lawton,

who has endorsed Clark and has campaigned for him in WI and NH, Doyle has said that he won't be endorsing anyone until after the nominee is determined. One can hope he'll change his mind, though.

I'm guessing that Feingold won't either.

Kohl - I don't know him well enough to have any sort of clue.

The Nelson endorsement is a stellar one. Gaylord Nelson is adored here (of course, I've been involved indirectly with the 'Environmental' crowd all my life, so I'm not exactly unbiased) and it's nice to have Nelson express his faith in Clark's commitment to the environment.

16. Just to add a little about Senator Gaylord Nelson

The University of Wisconsin has named its Environmental Institute (School of Environmental Science) after Gaylord Nelson. He (along with my dad) testified strongly against DDT and Sanguine in the early years.

Gaylord Nelson was a major inspiration for Russ Feingold to become interested in politics. Nelson's daughter, Tia, is a honcho at the Nature Conservancy (not sure exactly what her position is).
