Europeans lament a 'changed' America

By MORT ROSENBLUM
AP SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

PARIS -- In Paris, a hairdresser says with a laugh that if he can't vote on Nov. 2, at least he is splashing Heinz ketchup on his steak-frites as his contribution to the momentum against President Bush.

In Oslo, a young Norwegian expresses his thoughts on a Web site that takes advantage of Norway's two-letter Internet code: www.tellhim.no

Even in Warsaw, where many support Bush, Poles question the president's Iraq policy. "He banged his fist on the table," said Ewa Wojcik, a 44-year-journalist. "Whether it was the right table remains a question."

Opinion surveys concur that Europe heavily favors Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. But, beyond the numbers, conversations reveal a broad belief that the Atlantic Ocean is wider than at any time in modern memory.

1. I am right now in the UK, and just heard a radio travel ad for Mexico...
I couldn't believe my ears when I heard, in a scripted ad, that people would find a different culture, etc., there "despite increasing Americanization"! And this is in the UK, our best friends --

4. Americanisation over here

Once the word is Americanization over here, it is complete.

Seriously, this is actually globalisation. Cultures are converging.

7. I agree, which is why I put it in quotes
My take is that the US is a kind of clearinghouse for global culture.

6. If you've been paying attention to international business practices
in the last twenty years, what has happened in the U.S., i.e. the loss of integrity in its financial institutions, may have come as an influence from abroad. In order to compete in the global world, certain safeguards may have been overlooked.

It's not a novel idea. It's just something that's discussed in high-brow circles and it certainly hasn't hit the mainstream. I don't think this outsourcing is going to help us because it's just an attempt to legitimize those questionable practices.

5. That's what I don't understand
when the right-wing makes fun of the whole "global test" thing. We are a nation of 300 million, the population of the planet is 6 billion. Why WOULDN'T we want the world on our side?

8. I think it all comes back to fear
The more the administration makes us isolated form the rest of the world, the more we have to rely on them to feel safe, as if we need to be protected because the rest of the world is jealous and wants what we have. Otherwise we may learn what a real civilized democracy is like (representative gov't, 6 weeks paid vacation, universal health care)and turn against them.

Exactly the same could be said about North Korea.
