Debate preview: Kerry knows town hall format well

John Kerry (news - web sites) has another chance to surprise America Friday night, and perhaps President Bush (news - web sites), the same way his tight answers confounded expectations in the pair's first debate last week.

Kerry has been rehearsing for this night since the primary season, when his responses to voter questions helped propel him to a victory in the Iowa caucuses last January. "The long town hall meetings absolutely did him an amazing amount of good," said Iowa Democratic Chairman Gordon Fischer. Why? "Sheer knowledge, charm - which he does possess - and a willingness to listen and learn."

Handlon said he was pleased that Kerry asked him about his salary. "His answers to my overall question were trying to deal with the complexity of the issues. They didn't seem like a canned response, a memorized thing," Handlon said.

and now that I've got that off my chest: Bushit's LACK of experience with town hall format will become painfully obvious also. I expect more of the same meaningless, trite phrases and dumb confused sputtering as the first time. And I will love every minute of it!! :)

2. Here's my take

Kerry is super bright. He doesn't see the world in black and white and would prefer to take each case one by one, deciding each one on its merits.

Only simpletons see the world in black and white. In short interviews, simpletons come off looking better. In long form, they look like idiots. The town hall style allows Kerry to address each question on its own, probing for more information to make the best decision he can.

4. I just hope Charlie Gibson hasn't bought into the coWard's game

of screened audience participants and screened, "safe" questions. None of those innocuous "can I give you a real Navy salute" or "can I take a picture with you" questions! The coWard needs to fly solo -- we know he's terrified of the people.
