Iowa Voter Blasts Dean for Knocking Bush - AP
OELWEIN, Iowa - Howard Dean rejected a voter's request to be more neighborly and stop "mean mouthing" President Bush (news - web sites), saying Sunday someone needs to stand up to the president.

Dale Ungerer, a retiree from Hawkeye, Iowa, lectured Dean for nearly three minutes near the end of a forum aimed at winning voters for Iowa's Jan. 19 caucuses.

Ungerer accused Dean and other Democratic presidential hopefuls of dividing the country by bashing Bush instead of outlining their own plans and showing respect for authority.

"Please tone down the garbage, the mean mouthing, the tearing down of your neighbor and being so pompous," Ungerer told the former Vermont governor and Democratic front-runner. "You should help your neighbor and not tear him down."

"George Bush is not my neighbor," Dean replied.

"Yes, he is," Ungerer said, to which Dean responded: "You sit down."

Ummm..."you sit down"?? Dean needs to be more diplomatic in these cases. His message is spot-on and he needs to refute the charges of people like this but you don't speak to voters like that. That doesn't play in Peoria.

1. Of course Dean blasts the Iowa voter.
The whole Dean campaign is based on blasting Bush and anyone who gets in the way.

3. That guy was out of line, and a repuke plant...

I think he was incredibly nice about it, and I think we have seen that the public respects a candidate that stands up to people.

4. He didn't blast the "Iowa voter"
Let's not generalize. But he did go loco on one individual. He just needs to chill in these situations. Both Clark and Dean have spazzed in situations- Clark most recently on Fox, and then later in an event saying he'd "kick someone's ass" for questioning him.

2. "you sit down" quote taken out of context in this article ...
the media once again plays its readers for fools.

Dean only said "You sit down, you've had your say" after the registered Republican continued talking and not letting Dean respond.

Wouldn't it be great if this "concerned citizen" and the media required the same "please tone down the garbage, the mean mouthing, the tearing down of your neighbor, etc." from Republicans?

This only makes Dean look better in my eyes.

Why should he - or any American - be cowled by the hypocrites on the right who don't practice what they preach?

6. Umm..he looks better?
We need to help Dean prime himself for the general. Lashing out at the voter is NOT going to play well. Can't you see that?

8. Not the same
Misses the part where Unger says he is your neighbor. Sublte differences in details as well. If it get's locked, I don't particularly care though since it doesn't reflect great on Dean.

11. Fine, I don't know what a dupe is
I thought a "dupe" was the same article and this is a different article with some different details including what the voter said in response to Dean's comments. It also has Unger's remark: "He put me down definitely because he is who he is". That was not in the original. Why that matters? Dean lashing out at voters looks rude and it reflects poorly on character. He must avoid doing this.

10. Not same
Padraig- hate to disagree with you since we agree on much else, the Reuters article leaves out part of the exchange including Unger's response on Bush being a neighbor and Dean cutting him off. It's just his style that I'm concerned about.

12. It Is The Media's Style I'm Worried About
They give this Republican plant more ink than they gave Dean or
any other Democrat today.

We are going to have a very difficult time getting any kind of
message out past such a hostile media.
