TEXAS DU'ers! A church in Plano with "support Bush" signs
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 01:20 PM by devrc243
in the classrooms? I have a friend who just moved to Plano and they visited Prestonwood Baptist Church and they said that there were "support President Bush" signs in the bible study classrooms...?

Anybody heard of this? I did a newsmeat.com check on the pastor and he has donated 2,000 to Bush campaign. I know he can donate personally to Bush if he wants to but for him to use the church as a political platform is against the law.

Surely they're not that obvious:shrug:
What's going on?

1. Report them to the IRS
they should lose their tax-exempt status

2. I didn't see it myself so I'm not sure
exactly how it was "worded." My friend said that is was clear that they supported Bush and they felt uncomfortable being there. They won't be back.

3. Pastor Jack Graham?
Is he still there? Prestonwood is the Mecca of Southern Baptist churches in the D-FW area, having replaced downtown First Baptist Church after "Pope" Criswell finally retired.

It's a strange, strange world you live in, Pastor Jack, to paraphrase a pop song from the late '60s.

I go to a Baptist church. Whenever the pastor deviates into politics and starts insinuating in his sermon that * is the new, improved Son of God (I suppose because he will fight and kill the demonic Islamic "evildoers" en masse rather than "turn the other cheek" as the original "wimpy" SOG 1.0 counseled), I sometimes forget to go to church for the next month or two.

5. God, that's my brother's church
It wouldn't surprise me. That's one of the reddest areas in all of Texas. The congregation wouldn't have it any other way, believe me.

10. That's the church that had the pastor that was banging 4 of his
secretaries about 10 years ago. He got thrown out of the church, started another one, "D" magazine did an expose of him going to a pickup chicks party that had Barbie and Ken dolls on a tray.

7. ask him to go back
and take pictures... unobtrusively, maybe with cell camera..... or could pretend to take pix of people and have signs in background...

btw, have him drop by the Texas forum to meet some of the sane Dallasites .. there are many.

8. I can beat that...
the public high school in my town allowed the teachers to decorate their classrooms with pro-Bush signs, bumper stickers, and pamphlets. I was going to complain, but right away the dem teachers at the school demanded that they be allowed to post pro-Kerry stuff in their classrooms. Since all the 'cool' teachers are libs, and all the asshole teachers are cons, I decided not to complain cause it seems to be working out very well for us!

9. Doesn't fucking surprise me one bit
damn big ass church all about raking in the money. Sorry but that's all Prestonwood Baptist is about.

That area of Texas is so red, if you saw it on a map, it would look like a vicious killing took place all OVER that county. Ick. We used to live in Plano and got the hell out. It wasn't just that--we wanted to live in a more culturally diverse, OPEN MINDED area where the neighbors were actually NICE and not just all about the bling bling and who has more money.

Turns my stomach. This needs to be addressed. Know what? I think I'll call them now and ask about it. Heh heh. How do you block your number from showing up on caller ID?

14. Plano
for the most part: McMansions everywhere, snooty attitudes (not in EVERYONE but it is very prevalent), not much cultural diversity except Hispanics in old east Plano.

Decent schools but reputation a bit overblown.

16. Thanks
I thought it was rich and well off, my pal is an interesting guy, while he was living down there he was sort of a punk, I recall when he visited he loved the Misfits, Dead Kennedys, etc but since I talked to him recently he now seems to be a born again christian and marine recruit. He didn't tell me about the school system. Thanks, was just wondering. His parents, well his mom has since passed on but I believe she was originally Texan and their dad was from Oklahoma. Thanks, I am just trying to see what made him change.

18. Oh it definitely sounds like
he fits in in Plano!!!! Clean-cut, too, right? Just imagine Hitler youth...ok that wasn't nice. But think of Plano as Freeperland Central of Texas and you come pretty CLOSE to what it is like.

Seriously.

21. He doesnt grow his hair out like mine yeah
but it's odd, when he came back to live here briefly in 2001-2002, he was addicted to cigs, alcohol, and had experimented with a lot of drugs, Ive smoked before but seldom and I occassinally drink. I take it this is Delay's district? and the funny thing is he used to tell me a lot of the kids were on things down there, funny thing is, I've heard stories about how it is here in NoVA, it's sad to me to see all these privileged kids fucking themselves up, I fucked up my early years of HS not because I was on anything but becasue I was a bit of a slacker but now I am trying to reverse that trend, just saddens me to find out how my old friends and shit have turned out but it pleases me to see many suceed too, like my one friend is a National Merit Scholar I think, I like always except for politics am in the middle of this all heh, not a great student going to a great college but I am gonna be going to a comm college. Sorry for the rant.

24. drug use in Plano is pervasive, the Columbians actually targeted Plano
because of the number of rich kids with plenty of money and free time to waste away.

When I was in high school (in Carrollton), Plano was having serious problems with people dying of heroin overdose. I knew a girl who died around '97 or '98 from an overdose. Black tar heroin use was bad during the ninties in Plano...I'm not too sure whether things ever changed. Fortunately, I had great parents and never did any drugs.

I never really thought of Plano as too terribly 'clean cut'...I've always known alot of people who partied hard.

Actually, some of the first 'raves' in N. Dallas used to be in huge empty fields up in Plano...at least that's what i'm told.

With that said, Prestonwood Baptist is freeper city. For the release of "The Passion" some member of the church purchased every seat in all 17 theaters @ Cinemark movie theater, for a 8:00 morning showing...it cost around 56 thousand or so, if I remember correctly.

Also, Prestonwood Baptist is one of the largest churches I have ever seen...it's monstrous.

19. Plano has had 2 huge national scandals-one, a raft of teenage
suicides about 15 years ago that put Plano on the map. http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/suicide%20among%20teenagers The second, Plano was the hotbed of heroine use about 6years ago, due to all the money that the youth had. http://www.cnn.com/US/9807/22/heroin.arrests.01/

(I used to live in far north Dallas and The Colony)

LOL!

But seriously, I'd rather run hot piano wire through both my eyeballs than live anywhere north of Dallas or the mid-cities. Everything to the north is just freeperville.
