Amazon.com weirdness
go figger. i was at amazon.com a few minutes ago, buuying books for a montessori training class i am taking... i purchased four books- and you know how they suggest if you buy this book, you'll love these books?

well, four of the offered selections had to do with Montessori, and there was always a final book. And they had nothing to do with Montessori- they were Unfit For Command and Peaches Malkin's book justifying concentration camps. Only freeper tomes.

Huh?

never al franken's book, or richard clarke's... not that they have anything to do with Montessori, either.

maybe someone else could check it out and see if i'm getting a tinfoil chapeau.

sign me puzzled.

1. I just checked my "recommended books" on Amazon.
Everyone of them were LW. As far as I know, Amazon sets their recommendations based upon what you bought in the past.

Hmmm, what did you buy in the past?

3. I just looked at my Amazon recommendations
Here were my top 5:

Worse Than Watergate: The Secret Presidency of George W. Bush
by John W. Dean

The Price of Loyalty: George W. Bush, the White House, and the Education of Paul O'Neill
by Ron Suskind

Against All Enemies: Inside America's War on Terror
by Richard A. Clarke

American Dynasty: Aristocracy, Fortune, and the Politics of Deceit in the House of Bush
by Kevin Phillips

Thieves in High Places: They've Stolen Our Country--And It's Time to Take It Back
by Jim Hightower

In fact, the majority of my top 15 were along a similar vein. Of course I've bought a few liberal or Bush-critical books from Amazon before, so this is why.

I had "Unfit for Command" on my recommended list as well, supposedly because of some CDs I had bought!

8. Unfit to Command was on my personal Amazon page one day
I sent an email telling them to remove it or I would never buy another thing from Amazon (I buy from them a lot). It was removed.

9. It's probably a result of their algorithm.

A bunch of freepers must be buying books on Montessori teaching. That's my guess. It would be damning if they're trying to push RW propaganda, though.

addition: All the books on my list are Fortran and chemical physics books. That's kind of funny because I bought Hatfield's Fortunate Son and Miller's The Bush Dyslexicon within the last year.

10. Based on buying habits + best sellers
If you're new to them, they'll offer you the top sellers of other people who bought the same books. (I know little about Montessori, but is it ever associated with the neo-cons? do churches use it in their pre-school programs?)

Mine, for the record, are

William the Conqueror: The Norman Impact upon England by David C. Douglas
America: A citizen's guide (Jon Stewart)
Open GL Programming Guide
English Society in the Eighteenth Century (Penguin Social History of Britain) by Roy Porter
Everyday Life in the 1800s by Marc McCutcheon

I only buy from Amazon that which my local independent bookstore and Powells can't get for me. Thus, the randomness of the above list.

12. Have some fun with Amazon
Awhile back you could check out the children's series that contained "The Pet Goat" story. People were writing reviews like "This story was so fascinating I couldn't put it down even though the country was being attacked" signed G. Bush.

14. Amazon is a business trying to unload its overpurchases.
They are, I am sure, stuck with thousands of copies of that trash book, and are probably trying to unload it. Personally, I think that Rupert Murdock, or maybe the Swifties themselves, bought thousands of copies to get it on the best-seller list...and now sales are stalled.
