Dean needs it. He can't blow up with voters like this without serious repercussions. It's okay to do it to editorial boards behind closed doors but voters don't like being told "you sit down". He can do it. I've been pleased with how Dean has matured over the campaign, and he can get this under control.

Mr. Fix-it was a mild-mannered conservative Democrat (?). Dean is an asshole.

16. I can't tell who is serious here and who is kidding
But that was one incoherent blowhard freeper that Dean listened
to politely forever, and I think he handled him well
and said the right thing.

However, I dislike how vague Dean is when answering
questions in general. For example, the woman who asked
about how he'd help remedy the fact that college is unfordable
for the middle class. He rambled on and I never heard a firm answer.
He does that a lot.

When Kucinich and Clark answer a question, it's answered.
It's clear. Q&A.

We know the problems. He goes on and on and on about the problems.
I want to hear the solutions.
He doesn't articulate his solutions clearly.
I honestly feel beaten down after I listen to Dean.
I feel uplifted after I listen to Clark or Kucinich.

42. A freeper has undying unthinking devotion to King George.
How dare anyone criticize that fine figure of a "neighbor"!?!?
How dare anyone disprespect George W. Bush.
I loved Dean's reply: Bush isn't my neighbor.

It was the only thing he said that I liked.
Hell, it was the only position he clearly stated.
Other than that, he was vague, as usual.

That guy was completely incoherent for THREE minutes, and interrupted Dean after he tried to answer that freeper, so Dean told him to sit back down and let him speak.

Hmm, why are you defending this freeper voter?

55. Re your statement here:
"How did Dean reach out to voters like Dale Ungerer? Dean just dissed all of his concerns, flat out said "fuck you" to them."

He most certainly did not. He respected him enough to listen for three full minutes while a "Republican" plant went on and on and on and on about the current, base, and ridiculous talking points of the day.

And then he claimed his own time and set the record straight.

That guy wasn't there out of sincerity. He didn't give a damn WHO built the community center. He was there to make a spectacle of himself.

35. It's not just me!
A woman walked up to him just now (I know, rerun) and told
him to state what he'd do about the problems in his speeches.
She complained right to him that he didn't give specific solutions.
He said he usually does (I disagree).

Also, he needs to get some new phrases.
He has these boilerplate remarks ("The biggest lie people like
me tell people like you is that they'll solve all their problems...")
He ends every appearance I've seen with that.
And while there's some clear wisdom in it, after hearing if
a zillion times it just gets annoying. It also sounds more
and more like a cop out.
He tells the audience they have the power to change things, not him.
Then what do we need him for?
He doesn't articulate his solutions.
He says he can't solve our problems, the power is with the people.
Then what is he running on and for?

I listen to him every chance; I hear the same vacuous phrases over and over and over...

49. Ok, then what was his answer to that woman't question about college?
She raised the excellent question: middle class folks can't afford
college; what will you do to make college affordable.

He babbled about people working two shifts and rambled and...
alluva sudden he was answering another question.

I'm serious. It's very possible that I missed his answer.
Really it is. I'm not being sarcastic.

I'm not asking his policy; I'm asking for his answer in this Q&A.
I missed the A. :)

57. Vermont provides the LEAST funding for colleges out of all states
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 09:11 PM by gore-is-my-president
That's why he didn't answer the question.

http://www.gwu.edu/~action/2004/dean/dean0702/pollinaint.html

-snip-

QUESTION: How about the downside?
POLLINA: For me there are more things that come to mind readily, maybe in no particular order. Vermont has the most expensive state colleges in the country and we provide less support to our colleges than any other state does. So in other words in terms of the state providing support in terms of percentage of the colleges' budgets and whatnot Vermont ranks, I'm fairly certain we still rank 50th; in some analyses we rank 49th but we're the worst...

The fact is that over the last decade we have consciously underfunded or refused to fund our state colleges adequately. I mean there's no other way to look at it.

At one point the governor said well our state colleges they lost out during the recession or something like that. But the fact is we have not provided them adequate funding for a number of years and that's a serious problem for a lot of Vermonters who find themselves unable to afford state colleges.

As a comparison to that Vermont has over the last ten years, which is Dean's time in office, in Vermont we increased our investment in our prisons, our state prisons by 150 percent; we've increased our investment in our state colleges by about 7 percent. So we have done a lot more to build a put people in prison than we have to invest in and put kids in our colleges. And I think that that is something that Vermonters have become very concerned about in recent years as we sort of educate them about that. The statistics that I gave you come from the chancellor of the Vermont state colleges so it's all accepted and out there that's what we've done, and I think if we could have reversed those investments we would be better off, but we haven't.

I've been frustrated every time I see him deal with this question.

And higher ed=upward mobility.

If we can't afford it, we'll likely stay poor.
Even if Vt has a bad history with college cost,
can't Dean form a good policy going forward?
