The fuckers in Florida are disenfranchising Blacks again!
JACKSONVILLE - There was a time when the mostly black parishioners at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church might not have minded that no early-voting sites were set up in their neighborhood.

But after 2000, when Duval County's 27,000 discarded ballots came primarily from four mostly black, mostly Democratic precincts, they mind it very much.

Geographically, Jacksonville is the largest city in the continental United States -- 841 square miles -- but the only early-voting site, to open Monday, is at the downtown office of the Duval County Supervisor of Elections.

By comparison, Miami-Dade County will open 20 locations for early voting on Monday. Broward will open 13.

The single site in Jacksonville is only about seven miles from St. Paul, but the pastor said it might as well be 700.

''The majority of them really don't go downtown; it's rare for most of us,'' said the Rev. John Guns, a civic leader in his struggling neighborhood. ``The message we send is one of continuing a racist tradition of disenfranchisement and exclusion.''

A coalition of religious and political leaders, mostly black officials and clergy, have spent more than a week pushing election officials to add early-voting sites, but their requests have been soundly rejected.

1. Wouldn't it be great if they organized a march
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 07:06 AM by Onlooker
What great television that would make. It would really underscore the level of racism in Florida.

It's because of things like the corruption they're practicing in Florida that even if Bush wins, the right wing is going to face a very big fight that might be as ugly to them as it has been to their victims here at home.

13. Great, great idea. This would be dramatic. In the morning. You
nailed it, it would underscore the racism.

10. I heard a lot of the hearing on this and I would say no but---
not in the way we think but in a sort of round about way. Police cars sat around in groups. I can see how that would be just about the same to people who had a history of being picked on.Guess it is time we all got together and got into the new age where we all can vote. The flatworld people would only have white land owners and males vote I swear.

Yet think nothing of doing it right here.

And is it or is it EMBARRASSING knowing the entire world is watching the SO-CALLED "greatest democracy" in the world -and bush's big fat ugly lips chanting ON and ON and bloody ON about his SPREADING DEMOCRACY and FREEDOM and ELECTIONS all over the bloody world- while we're suffering AGAIN and ALREADY through rampant rightwingnut election FRAUD.

They can't get away with this. Well... yes, they can. We can't let them.

On edit... :hi:

8. Exactly my point. It's a heavily REPUBLICAN county...
so of course they've set up the locations conveniently.

11. I think their main purpose is to suppress the overall black vote.....
"What's the use to going and vote..? My vote isn't going to count anyway."

12. We had the same problem here: the NAACP fixed it
They threatened a lawsuit, and one well timed newspaper editorial and BAM! take that you fuckers 3 new sites open all across the county. (Volusia county)

The NAACP is gonna be a player in this election, voting wise and after-action legally wise. 2000? Never again!

14. The DNC and the Kerry campaign need to organize immediate GOTV here.
They need to start phone banking and transportation to the early voting location right now and do it daily until the election.

They were disenfranchised before the election ever began.

It's the only thing that may work in such a short amount of time.
