South Carolina Voters may give Dean pass on race issue
Lack of blacks in Vermont Cabinet easy to understand, some observers say

By AARON GOULD SHEININ
Staff Writer

Howard Dean is likely to get a pass from South Carolina voters for failing to appoint a single black to his Cabinet during 12 years as governor of Vermont, several black leaders and political observers said Monday.

“People are going to look at his agenda more than what he did as governor of Vermont,” said Benedict College political scientist Glenda Suber. “It’s what he’s proposing to do as president.”

S.C. voters also will give Dean the benefit of the doubt, given the racial make-up of his state, said state Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter , D-Orangeburg, a member of the Democratic National Committee who has not endorsed a presidential candidate.

“People of color here realize that Vermont is a state that is about 98 percent Anglo,” Cobb-Hunter said.

Dean is the national front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination. In a candidates’ debate in Iowa on Sunday, he admitted he had no black Cabinet members during his six terms as governor.

3. But add his postion on AA, death penalty, no MLK day in Vermont

JULY 15, 2003

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) assailed two top-tier presidential candidates from opposite ends of the crowded primary field — Sen. Joe Lieberman (Conn.) and former Gov. Howard Dean (Vt.). They said relations wouldn’t improve until the two White House hopefuls change their positions or retract what they view as offending statements.

-snip-

Lawmakers are reevaluating their opinion of Dean in light of what they believe was an inappropriate retort he made on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” on June 22. Under questioning from host Tim Russert, Dean said his host’s queries were frivolous and “like asking me who the ambassador to Rwanda is.” Word of Dean’s Rwanda comment quickly spread among black lawmakers.

Columnist Robert Novak reported July 6 that “some black politicians were offended that Dean cited the U.S. envoy to an African country, whose name he obviously did not know, as unimportant trivia.”

Jackson said, “That little quip, as it is, was not appropriate. He should offer an explanation and just why he thinks Rwanda is not important.”

“I think Dean blew it,” said Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.).

5. FACT CHECK
I hate to keep pointing out the lack of veracity in certain posts. I'm not trying to embarass anybody -- really. Although I can certainly see why some might be embarrased for having repeated factual errors corrected. I'm sure there is no foul intent in such posts, just honest mistakes, I'm sure.

Vermont observes MLK, Jr. as a state holiday.
