Howard Dean is likely to get a pass from South Carolina voters for failing to appoint a single black to his Cabinet during 12 years as governor of Vermont, several black leaders and political observers said Monday.

Contending that recruiting minorities for high-level posts in state government is difficult in a state that is nearly 98 percent white, one black Vermont leader who met regularly with Dean praised his efforts as governor.

Vaughn Carney, a lawyer and executive with a financial services company, recalled turning down Dean’s requests to serve in the administration.

“He asked if I had an interest or if I knew of anyone who had an interest,” Carney said Monday. “I, myself, was constrained by other commitments. I wasn’t aware of anyone who would be qualified or would be available.”

that this is just an issue that is being blown out of proportion in hopes of doing as much damage as possible.

11. Interesting...

This is basically what I and a few others were saying on this board yesterday. There are less than 3,200 Blacks in Vermont. Of those, probably none applied for jobs in Dean's SIX-POSITION cabinet. The ones that were asked (and we now know that at least one was asked) didn't even want the job.

I believe I was saying something about this being a "non-issue"...?
