Please tell me ya'll have read Keillor's book, "Homegrown Democrat"

Garrison Keillor? I just bought the book today and am more than halfway done (it's a quick read). I have never read anything of his before and I am totally in LOVE.

He speaks for me and to me about what it is to be a Democrat and why I am a Democrat. My God, the man is just wonderful. And I am so proud he is on "my side."

Just a snippet:

"The Union does not rest on strength of arms or financial wealth but on the common faith of American people that their children have a fair chance to thrive, that the iron gates have not slammed shut on them, that there is justice, that the Bill of Rights has not been privatized. That is the bottom line in America: we have to feel that our kids stand a chance--otherwise, there's a civil war brewing."

How much do I love this guy? And his section on what he thinks of Republicans (towards the beginning) had me HOWLING. Priceless stuff.

1. I have. I'm really big fan of Garrison Keillor after reading the book.

He says, in beautiful plain language, what it means to be a Democrat. This really is must reading.

2. It is.

I found it to be so inspiring. I don't remember when the last time was that I was this moved by anything I read. I am also reading the Big Dog's book and I find it fascinating and VERY thought-provoking and interesting, but it is more historical and Keillor's book is more of a statement on the way things are right now. He makes me proud to be a Dem. And that I am raising my daughter this way.

4. He is such a good Democrat. I remember after Coleman won the Senate race..

in 2002. Keillor wrote this blistering article in Salon...articulating the grief all of us felt when Paul Wellstone died...and Norm Coleman was elected. Keillor articulated my feelings beautifully...overwhelming sadness at Wellstone's death...and anger over that soulless empty suit winning the race.

I'm pleased and honored that Garrison Keillor is one of us.

5. I read "Homegrown Democrat" over a month ago and have

recommended it to everyone I meet. Right now it is currently borrowed by a local public librarian - seems her boss doesn't think it is necessary to have a copy on hand! She is passing it around to her co-workers.

It really lays out in plain English what it means to be a Democrat and the pride we should take in the title Democrat and liberal. Keillor's childhood is very similar to mine although he was raised in the "frozen" north and my childhood was spent in central Kentucky - both of our families gave us our values, ethics, pride in country and hope for the future for all Americans.

Favorite quote from the book?

"Republicans have perfectly nice manners, normal hair, pleasant smiles, good deodorants, but when it comes right down to it, you do not want them to be monitoring your oxygen tube or running your child's school."

3. I ordered a dozen copies and starting passing them out.

The people I gave them to have now given them to other people. I'll know the world is getting to be a better place when someone I know offers one of the copies to me.
