Corpus Christi TEXAS Caller-Times endorses Kerry!
Is Bush baby losing Texas, too?

The Caller-Times, a major South Texas daily, is now owned by the national Scripps-Howard chain, but this year Scripps has released its member papers from a corporate endorsement, allowing editors free speech at the local level.

Another editorial to explain the endorsement, then:

Natalie Maines was recently asked if she ever thought about taking back her statement that the group was "ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

Ms. Maines, said "no way," if she apologized then the Bush administration would accuse her of "flip-flopping!"

2. Here's what you need to know about Texas
Politically, it's really two states. South Texas is heavily Democratic, and the rest of Texas isn't. The Caller Times endorsed Bush last election, but that was because Scripps Howard endorsed as a group.

What is kind of interesting about this is that Corpus Christi kind of straddles the line between Texas and South Texas. It has a large hispanic population, but it also has plenty of people who you would commonly think of as Texan. It went 51% for Bush in 2000, so it's a little Republican, but not as much as the rest of the state.

I would say that it's still predominately Bush, so the letters to the editor are gonna be really fun for the next couple of days.

I'm now in L.A. and she's in Chicago but this feels really good. Way to Go- Corpus Christi Caller Times. I think I'll give them a call offering my support.

4. If you want to show support for the CCC-T's Kerry endorsement,
write a short LTTE. The LTTEs are currently about 2/3 Bush vs 1/3 Kerry. Because of its endorsement, there will be a storm of attacks against the paper from the tightly-organized anti-choice community and the insurance-industry-funded CALA groups. These right-wing groups are very strident here in CC and they regularly organized LTTE campaigns. You can write a supportive LTTE by email at the following website:

5. See what you mean. Link to "letters" of late and most are anti-Kerry
"http://www.caller.com/ccct/letters_to_the_editor/0,1641,CCCT_841,00.html" Letters seem to run 4:1 for Bush. Whose fault is that?

Wonder if Republicans belong to a letter writing group? This paper needs to hear some rebuttal from Democrats.

6. The CCCT regularly publishes LTTEs from out-of-town
nonsubscribers so do not hesitate to send them a short LTTE in email form just because you're not from Corpus Christi or not even from Texas. You can help by sending a quick "attaboy" LTTE to help balance out all the hateful anti-choice and anti-consumer LTTEs they'll get.

7. I wrote a reply
To one anti-Kerry letter recently online but they didn't publish it. Most of the letters on their website lately have been pro-Bush. Although I think they make SOME effort to be balanced. Sometimes I cannot believe the ignorance of some of thes letter-writers.
