Statement on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday
CARROLL, IA -- Governor Dean issued the following statement today on the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

"The life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. represented the best our country has to offer: A dedicated patriot who believed in a better America and fought throughout his life to advance the cause of equal rights.

"His dream of a country where people are judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character is something that we must strive for everyday. As he said, we can never be satisfied until every American is equal in opportunity and voice.

"We need to continue to talk openly about race in this country, and the ongoing struggle to ensure equal rights for all Americans. This has never been and never will be an easy struggle. But it is one in which we must prevail.

"A generation ago, Dr. King gave us the hope and the dream--it is up to us to achieve it."
