Keen on Dean

Babbitt, Hawken, and other enviros throw their weight behind Dean

by Bruce Babbitt, Paul Hawken, Bill McKibben, and Terry Tempest Williams

15 Jan 2004

We've spent much of our lives working for environmental change -- for a response to global warming, for the preservation of biodiversity, for wild places, for family farms. But this winter, we're working for Howard Dean for president -- backing him in the confident hope that his victory will mean that the deep environmental principles of the American people will finally prevail over the narrow special interests that for too long have dominated our country.

It's not that we're against the other contenders for the Democratic nomination. Several of them have fine environmental records, and all of them would be a major improvement over the incumbent, who has allowed and encouraged the destruction and degradation of our air, water, and land.

But with the unprecedented Dean campaign, we sense a new possibility for a deeper democracy. This campaign has come from nowhere -- not with spin, not with TV commercial blitzes, not with focus groups and catchy slogans. It's come through the sheer hard work and devotion of hundreds of thousands of Americans, a political force like nothing we've seen in many years. Just consider the amazing fact that he has raised more than $40 million, and that the average contribution is under a hundred bucks. That speaks volumes about the new chapter he's writing in American politics.

Wes Clark
has staked out very strong environmental positions on pretty much every key issue. You can add to that his corporate work on boards of several alternative energy companies.

So, no I don't think that is what the poster was implying. Probably just a big of sour grapes. Babbit, et al is a wonderful group of endorsements.

10. And nome of their records comes close to Kerry's 30+ years
of active advocacy, including his work on international environmentalism.

Kerry can hit the ground running DAY ONE. he won't have to wait for studies, because he already KNOWS the science.

12. I don't really see what the article has to do with Kerry.
Please don't hijack this thread.

Second thought, forget it. Impossible to post any good news about Dean without it getting shit on anyway.

Why should this thread be any different than my first Dean thread posted months and months ago?

9. don't worry
4StarWes - the Bush administration will take care of all those nasty trees for us. There won't be any left to hug by the time they finish.

Maybe we can put 'em in the tree museum - and charge all the people a dollar and a half just to see 'em.

5. I really don't understand
Is Babbit just a shill? Does he make his endorsement without knowing anything about Dean?

7. Clark scored Earth Day founder endorsement--WI Sen Gaylord Nelson
Nelson, who was born in Clear Lake, Wisconsin, served in the state senate from 1949 to 1959. He was Wisconsin’s governor from 1959 until 1962, when he was elected to the U.S. Senate. As a senator, Nelson helped enact President Johnson’s Great Society program and was an early opponent of the Vietnam War.

Nelson is one of the leading environmentalists in Senate history. He introduced the first legislation to ban DDT in 1965, and founded Earth Day on April 22, 1970, in a successful effort to focus attention on the nation’s deteriorating environment.

The United Nations has twice recognized Nelson for his achievements, and the state of Wisconsin named Madison’s Gaylord Nelson State Park after the Senator to honor his service. In 1995, in recognition of his environmental legacy, President Clinton awarded Nelson the Medal of Freedom, the highest award given to civilians in the United States.
