Theoretical VP for John Edwards?

I've been saying that John Edwards as VP would be a good complement to any of the candidates who are already running, but who'd be a good match for Edwards if he got the nod? And what qualities would either balance or add something to his ticket?

I honestly think it needs to be someone not in the race and there are many to choose form.

Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson took second place under Kennedy (a young, junior senator) in '60. I'm certain that Dean would do the same if it would unite the party and help us defeat Bush. But frankly, I think Edwards is going to be the veep, not Dean.

Not exactly a viable comparison. Kerry would be a better "LBJ" in your example.

I don't think Clark has ruled out the VP slot. I think they would be a strong ticket, BUT...

In the interest of winning, I think Edwards should consider Graham. We need Florida on OUR side this time.

are the two things where Edwards will appear weak... I know this probably wouldn't fly, but doesn't the governor of New Mexico (I want to say Bill Richardson) have both of these?

Clark has foreign policy, of course. But the weakness with Edwards/Clark is that neither is experienced in government.

I don't know why Bill Richardson would take it. From what I've heard, he ought to run for President one day, and if he stayed governor he'd probably have a better shot at the White House than if he became Vice-President. Anyone know if Richardson has Presidential ambitions?

And I say that as a very strong Clark supporter. He's a good man, and his positive campaign is gaining steam. His strong showing in Iowa means he will be able to move on to the south. Everything is up in the air now but I doubt about Dean's strength in the south or the midwest where many of the deciding primaries will occur.

Dean is in decline and all the other viable candidates are on the rise.

On Edit: misread a post, thought someone above was discounting Edwards shot, which he still obviously has.

in its appeal to voters, I believe, but Edwards could pair up well with a lot of people. He is also such a quick learner as a campaigner that I am sure that if given the chance he will make a very strategic choice.

to have a president-VP team with a total of 6 years in DC.


Sometimes I wonder if Clark is the one tagged as VP from the start. I think not running in IA might have been designed to let JRE assert himself.

And Clark as VP without running in primaries wouldn't work. Nobody knows him and he's never been a politician. But this way, people get to know and like him. If Edwards picks him, he picks up a fully formed persona in addition to a name, biography, rank and serial number.

are you serious about Clark's looks ?

I find him creepy looking but I'm male so my opinion is useless. I hear this occasionally but I really don't get it.

However Edwards is clearly a good looking man.

25. What about Joe Lieberman?

Gore ran as a populist and picked Lieberman as a "signal" to Corporate America that he wasn't serious. While Gore was shouting "I will work for you" Lieberman was telling the Corporate Media that Gore's progressivism was just "rhetorical flourishes".

If Edwards wants to send a signal to Corporate America that he's not going to harm their interests, he needs to pick a good centrist like Joe.

I certainly hope that Edwards would choose Dennis Kucinich or Barbara Lee instead.
