Mr Carter who, like Dr Dean, was a little known governor before he ran for the White House, appeared after teaching at Sunday school and heaped praise on his guest after they had worshipped together at his local Baptist church.
Standing with Dr Dean in front of the town’s peanut store, not far from the disused train depot that served as his 1976 campaign headquarters, Mr Carter said of his opposition to the Iraq war: “I am particularly grateful for the courageous and outspoken posture Governor Dean has taken from the beginning.
“I have spent a lot of the past year and a half strongly opposing this completely unjust war, which has turned out to be based not only on misleading statements, but has been a sustained demonstration of tragedy.”
