My understanding is that he missed the draft by a year or so because of his age. The draft ended before Sharpton could be called up too.

I'm sure he would have served. Let's face it, he didn't have the financial resources to avoid it.

Edwards was born on June 10, 1953. That would have made him part of the last lottery drawing on February 2, 1972. Edwards birthdate drew a lottery number of 178. This lottery was for men to be drafted for service in 1973, but no new draft orders were issued after 1972.
