'Nother question: How will Iowa results be reported?
Edited on Mon Jan-19-04 12:21 PM by Skinner
I must admit my ignorance here. If this were a straightforward primary vote, then obvously we'd just get a breakdown of percentages:

Candidate A: 42%
Candidate B: 29%
Candidate C: 11%
etc.

But when the returns come in from Iowa, are they going to be in a similar format? Are we going to get a list of percentages to represent the number of "votes" or rather "caucus supporters" or something? Or are we going to get a number representing a percentage of delegates? Or will it come in some other format?

EDIT: Changed title of thread to make it a little more clear.

2. from a Kos blogger-

It wouldn't be a stretch, if the polls are correct, to imagine multiple winners tonight. Like a Harris Senate announcement, yes, no, maybe... or a BCS result, with one candidate claiming victory in the first tally, a second candidate claiming victory in the final percentage tally, and a third candidate, with the same number of final delegates, claiming a tie with the other guy.

It must be some mathematical formula that determines delegates from the percentages. This writer- ploy sci prof, I believe- seems to imply that even a higher percentage could result in an even number of delegates

3. The "official" result is the %% of delegates.
And this is after realignment, i.e. having people who have less than viability choose another candidate, or to go home, or to vote for "uncommited" if viable.

There may, however, also be entrance polls, which would be closer to the first-round "vote"... I don't know whether the party will release the actual initial vote totals

6. From what I've read, the raw and realigned vote don't get reported.
Just the number of delegates.

5. Interesting.
So the "official" results will be a percentage representing "Delegate Strength." Am I correct to conclude that the Delegate Strength could actually be significantly different from a (hypothetical) straight vote by caucus-goers?

7. Sure they could be different
"realignment" can cause quite large shifts in the numbers...

8. Results website:
http://www.caucus2004.org

Results will be reported in real-time, as they are digitally phoned in from each percinct, I understand.

The climax of presidential campaigning in Iowa happens tonight (January 19), when Iowans gather at 1,993 Democratic Party precinct caucus sites throughout the state. Radio Iowa will provide 4-minute reports, twice hourly (:04 and :30), beginning at 7:30 p.m. and continuing until shortly after 10:00 p.m. Matt Kelley will anchor our coverage and we'll have reporters stationed at candidates' headquarters. Where possible, we'll provide live feeds of speeches from key candidates.

they will also be providing "TEXT" of their reports at the website

10. Regardless of percentages
I'd wager there will be plenty of insinuations that whoever does what, the boy king is "unbeatable".

Any takers? ;-)

12. In light of his recent 45% approval rating in one poll, that may not
be as prevalent as I would have previously thought. He's definitely looking beatable, so it'll be interesting to see if the media spins it that way.
