Dean Joined by His Wife to Cap Iowa Campaign
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Singer Joan Jett and comedian Janeane Garofalo joined Howard Dean on Sunday evening for a high-spirited campaign rally, but the big draw of the day was another woman who's less well-known: his wife.

Judith Steinberg Dean, an internist who runs her own practice in Shelbourne, Vt., spoke for fewer than five minutes at two rallies during a surprise visit to Iowa. But her brief foray onto the political stage was something of a coming-out event because, until now, she has shunned campaigning with her husband as he seeks the presidency.

Her unexpected appearance was such a draw that the 30-member media corps covering the former Vermont governor's campaign huddled outside on an airport tarmac for 15 minutes in below-freezing temperatures just to catch a glimpse of his elusive spouse.

4. This was good!
He definitely glistens when he is around her. You can actually see it in his eyes. It's gotta be crazy hard for him, or both of them, to be away from each other so much during the campaign. It was good to see. The simple fact that Howard adores his wife proves to skeptics that Howard Dean isn't this angry man.

6. I guess those patients and kids can keep a week or two
seems another member of the family has a finger in the air testing wind direction.

7. Foul
In an earlier thread I predicted that criticism would turn from Dr. Steinberg not campaigning to Dr. Steinberg neglecting her patients to campaign. Two other posters and I stated that we would cry foul when this happened, so I'm keeping my word.

8. Except it's a day or two
There are two other docs in her practice so I'm sure days off are allowed. I hope that eases your sincere concern.

Dean has said on numerous occasions that she would make some appearances- I've seen her say the same thing.

Considering some of the tangential crap that's thrown, if my name were Dean, I can assure you I'd have a finger up, but not for testing anything.

11. its not been an issue for a year and it was clearly explained to start
so why the need to reverse the accepted plan ?

I'm glad that she supports her husband and I was glad that she did it in whichever way worked for her. Its Howard Dean that is running after all.

If keeping the home fires burning was the right thing before, its still the right thing. And it WAS the right thing for their family.

The knee jerk is what is sad. So unnecessary.

18. One writer writes one story
and she's popping up everywhere including a Bill and Hillary style People Mag exclusive.

Yes, it is sad.

But she seems like a nice lady.

12. Right or wrong,
I think her appearance on the campaign trail will help him. They do look good together and it is very apparent that they are a great couple.

14. She seems like a great asset
At least from impressions, she seems really nice and down to earth and warm and smart. (Not too bad to look at either.)

I hope she becomes a bot more visible, as I think she helps to bring out his human side.

16. I have nothing nasty to say here-
But I got the funniest e-mail of an Iowa headline this afternoon-

A pic of Dean and Carter, and beneath, the headline reads "Dean Appears with his wife, Jimmy Carter"-

and I hope Dean supporters will tkae this in the spirit it's intended, just a source of a chuckle to ease some of the tension.:toast: The comment by the original sender was "Either my local paper knows something we don't, or they need some new proofreaders to check their headlines!" LOL
