Moral Issues Voting

Hey I am going to a discussion later this evening on Moral Issues as a reason for your vote...any good discussion points I could bring up to make myself look smart? Thanks...

1. Poverty, Hunger

The number of working families in poverty is increasing.

The number of children on reduced price/free lunches is increasing.

8 million children in this country have no Health Insurance.

Census Bureau reports nearly 1/4 of the jobs in the U.S. are low wage. That means people are working and working hard, but still not earning enough to raise a family. While some tout education, the fact is, there are some people who do not have the mental capacity for high level jobs and there are important jobs in our society that don't require a lot of education. Think of many of our service workers in hotels and restaurants). Sometimes these jobs are a stepping stone for people on their way to better jobs, but for some this is it. Don't you think these people are entitled to be free from worry about hunger? Shouldn't their children have the same access to education and healthcare as the child of a millionaire?
Our society is messed up, we pay people who can throw a football millions while our farm workers are homeless.

don't let what is "moral" get defined narrowly by "Christian fundamentalist" values ... tell them where they can stick their "holier than thou" attitudes ...

there's been way too much focus on "superbowl boobs" and naughty language ... that stuff pales when compared to the real issues of immorality that republicans sponsor ...

the real moral issues of our day encompass bush's violations of the Geneva Convention with regard to treatment of prisoners ... we have tortured and isolated human beings all in the name of "we're the good guys" ... well, we're not when we treat people that way ...

and what morality is it that allows us to be such a wealthy nation while so many others live in destitute poverty ... where is the morality republicans preach when so many children right here in the U.S. cannot get healthcare because they are poor ... where is the morality that enables some to amass great fortunes while our schools remain sub-standard ...

Democrats have done a poor job framing the issue of morality in a way that wins them votes ... but make no mistake about it, there is no morality in a party that promotes perpetual war abroad and widening gaps between rich and poor at home ...

4. It is NOT moral

to strip your fellow Americans of their jobs just to fatten your own portfolios. You can stick that in the Rethugs' faces!

5. Going into the discussion...

I was toying around with the idea that the term "moral values" is very misleading. When it comes down to it I too voted for because of the moral values I hold; I believe it is just to tell the truth, to help your fellow human, regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, nationality, sexual preference, and to work for the good of all than to just benefit yourself. I don't believe Bush has any of these qualities so I voted for Kerry. Did I vote based on my moral values? Yes, I suppose I did. Are they the Christian Right/ Neo-Con values that the press is portraying? Hell no. When I got to the discussion one of the panelists was the daughter of a pastor and a very liberal Democrat (almost Green) and I tell you it was so refreshing to hear her talk about her beliefs and moral values...and I realized that the Christian Left could potentially be a very powerful group to really show how awful the people currently running this country are. Is anyone familiar with Joan Chittister? She is a "Benedictine sister" and author and she seems to have her act together. Her website is http://www.nationalcatholicreporter.org/fwis/ and it is def worth a look. Anyway I am sort of rambling again, I tend to do that...

6. Moral issues are not going to church and praying to Jesus

only. Or, whether you support abortion and oppose Gay Marriage.

Moral issues are generousity, kindness, forgiveness, caring for the elderly and poor, being rational, logical and most of all equal rights for ALL. These are things I value.
