How Dean could win: A conservative's view
An influential Bush supporter sees the Democratic front-runner as a credible challenger to the president

Could Dean really win? Unfortunately, yes. The Democratic presidential candidate has, alas, won the popular presidential vote three times in a row — twice, admittedly, under the guidance of the skilled Bill Clinton, but most recently with the hapless Al Gore at the helm. And demographic trends (particularly the growth in Hispanic voters) tend to favor the Democrats going into 2004.
But surely the fact that Bush is now a proven president running for re-election changes everything? Sort of. Bush is also likely to be the first president since Herbert Hoover under whom there will have been no net job creation, and the first since Lyndon Johnson whose core justification for sending U.S. soldiers to war could be widely (if unfairly) judged to have been misleading.
And President Bush will be running for re-election after a two-year period in which his party has controlled both houses of Congress. The last two times the American people confronted a president and a Congress controlled by the same party were in 1980 and 1994. The voters decided in both cases to restore what they have consistently preferred for the last two generations: divided government. Since continued GOP control of at least the House of Representatives seems ensured, the easiest way for voters to re-divide government would be to replace President Bush in 2004. And with a plurality of voters believing the country is on the wrong track, why shouldn't they boot out the incumbent president?

My apologies if this was posted before. I did a search here and on LBN and couldn't find it. A very important article for those who say Dean can't win against Bush.

1. Maybe Kristol really wanted to title

his article "How Dean will lose", but realized that he can save that headline when Dean is the nominee!

2. Contradiction:

When Republicans say they think Dean can win and they fear him, they want to run against Dean.

When Republicans say they think Dean is easy pick'ns and they want to run against Dean, they want to run against Dean!

The moral of the story--

1) Don't take Republicans seriously until they have a record for telling the truth.
2) Don't take the Dean bashers seriously until they start running credible campaigns.

4. Not a contradiction

the point is is that the GOP only talks about Dean so the news covers him, most viewers of the media believe there is more crediblilty to a candidate with the most media coverage. I'd like to see what the polls would be if the media interjected a Clark story instead of Dean. Case in point. Clark has been just as hard on the GOP saying that we are not safer with the capture of Hussien but the media continues to invoke Dean right now coming up on MSNBC.

is not an a priori proposition, my friend.

Media conspiracy theories don't work either. If you candidate is way behind in most of the key states, why should you expect coverage? That's the problem with the Clark and Kerry campaigns -- they believe they are **owed** everything and don't bother to work for it.

The Rethugs are cooking all these plots to make Dean the candidate they know they can beat? Are you smoking the same stuff Bush smoked when he said we would find WMDs in Iraq? :smoke:
