The terror alert was raised because of Dean.
Many people here believe that Dean is the one Bushco wants. Well I think the alert was raised to help Dean. They raised it so Dean can say: "See we are not safer. I told you. They are wrong I am right." This is another brilliant Rove trick.

Edited on Sun Dec-21-03 03:07 PM by poskonig
Why does it apply when the Republicans supposedly want Dean, but doesn't apply when Dean supporters claim they "fear" him?

11. isn't it sad
that we actually take it for granted that the bush administration would manipulate the terror level to impact the democratic primaries. Whether or not this is actually the case, it is sad that they are so low we can accept this possibility without giving it a second thought.

that's why we need anybody but bush!

15. funny though . . .
how some Dean supporters on this board jumped on the Bush/Ridge propaganda machine's latest terror alert hype to bolster Gov. Dean's statements about America not safer after Saddam.

27. The capture of Saddam was real.
The terror alerts have been shamelessly used in the past to frighten Americans into supporting the Bush foreign policy doctrine. What do Ridge's words really mean?

31. The capture of Saddam by Kurds weeks ago is real
There was no "capture" of Saddam by US forces. US forces are still mostly clueless when it comes to analyzing intel on the ground in Iraq and apprehending criminals there.

17. Well, probably not
I think the whole terror alert system is a bit of a joke frankly, unless they can really increase security based on target information. Basically it gives the illusion BushCo is doing something *real/new* to protect us. And it helps Bush maintain support. While the result may be what you propose (helping Dean), don't think it was planned that way.

18. Safer does not mean safe
Nobody said we are totally safe with Saddam captured. This kind of illogical leaping around from one premise to another is exactly why we lose. It's the bigger picture of the ME, world relations and U.S. security that every other candidate is referring to with the capture of Saddam. Not whether I am safer from one day to the next sitting here in my home. If that's the case, forget terrorism and just focus on crime. That would really make me safer. I hope Howard doesn't start down this path. Just more foolish fodder.

28. But more dangerous means less safe
No matter how you slice it the Bush Administration just admitted America is less safe today (as of 1:30) than we were for the several week prior to Saddam's capture. That makes Dean's statement categoically correct.

this place has become so (fill in the blank) that you can't tell when "they" are being sarcastic or if "they" really believe what "they're" saying. In this case, I think "it" really believes this.

26. No you have it backwards
Actually Bush F***ed up the war on Iraq on purpose to make Kerry look bad because he was so afraid of him.

You surely know that there were WMD's all over the place, and they just won't release the information because it might help Kerry stop Dean.

They have had Osama for months at GITMO in a warehouse with the 50 tons of sarin, the millions of liters of botulinum and a couple of nukes. Once Dean has the nomination all locked up and Kerry drops out you know that Faux news will be there interviewing Osama and putting the weapons on parade.

Those nasty repugs will do anything to avoid Kerry!

29. Now THAT'S desperation
It was obvious to anyone that watched the day unfold that the alert was given to cover over the breaking news that Kurds captured Saddam, not US forces.

Yes, it was a Rove trick, but it wasn't brilliant. This made Dean look good to all voters, not just the base. Dean was right about national security and Dumbya, the neo-cons, and the centrists were wrong about national security.

The way you set Dean up to do well while helping the far-right is by setting up Dean to do will on an issue important to the base of the party that simultaneously drives away the center and right. Something like tax cuts would be a good example of a wedge issue that could help the far right at the same time. Do something that make Dean look right to the left for wanting to increase taxes to the middle class.

Making Dean look like a brilliant national security analyst was exactly the wrong thing for Rove to do.
