Tavis Smiley was on Washington Journal and a lady called in to tell him to keep up the good work. She went on to say that she heard Judge Charles Pickering had retired from the federal appeals court. She then told them her name, Brenda Polkey, and that she was the one who had the cross burned in her front yard. Of course, Brian Lamb had to jump in at that point to get as much information out of her as possible. She told a woeful tale of how she was harrassed with phone messages, gun shots through her window and a cross being burned on her front lawn all because she was in an interracial marriage. Charles Pickering reduced the sentence of the man convicted for the crime from 7 years to 2 1/2 years.
When Tavis got a chance to respond, he was actually choked up and was able to bring home how wrong it was for Bush to appoint Pickering in a recess appointment only hours after laying a wreath at the grave of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. If you get a chance, watch the replay at www.c-span.org -- it was a nice, unscripted moment of television.
