I already shop @ all the Democratic contributers stores and never step foot in any of the Repuke contributers stores! (I will admit to Walmart on the RARE occasion, but I've sworn against it for Christmas) Now I know why my Repuke co-worker was so pissed off at me for shopping at Nordstrom's! These are very helpful. Nordstrom was not on the choosetheblue list nor was Starbuck's but I assumed because of their Seattle roots that they were and I was right--because they are on the Buy Blue list.

I was very happy to see J. Crew on here. Lucky brands clothing stores are not on either list but my daughter tells me they are progressive. The clothes are expensive but that is because they are not made with slave labor.

Thank you--thank you. I still will not go to an Exxon station because of the Alaska oil spill years ago nor will I ever go to Jack in the Box after they killed children with e coli years ago. Where I spend my money is important to me.

I like this list, but I've boycotted Shell for years because of their involvement in apartheid South Africa and Nigeria.

improve their PR. Have you seen their ads? Discussion about alternative energy sources, the environment...
Even though 56% of their donations went to Dems, that still means they contributed 44% to repubs.
Based on other consumer guides I've read over the years, ALL oil comapnies are evil in one way or another. Sad.

Every single fossil fuel company needs to be viewed with suspicion. However as a former offshore oil worker (wellsite geologist--and yes, I feel sorry about that) Shell Oil was about the best to work for. They didn't skimp on equipment or procedures--and they had a safety bonus program that actually PAID.

This doesn't excuse their vile behaviour in Africa, I just can't shake the feeling that all the other oil companies would act that way, and wouldn't even balance that out in the TINY way that Shell did.

Obviously the best hing to do is buy as little petroleum as possible

We just signed up for Costco last month. We buy mostly groceries and other necessities and most of their prices are great. And we are also thinking about signing up with Netflix again. We couldn't afford it for a while.

I'll stop buying at Safeway. They are too expensive anyway. I don't want to indirectly finance Republican liars and cheaters.

21. Small businesses owned by DU members

Perhaps it would also make some sense to compile a list of, and links to, small businesses owned by members of DU. I personally have tried very hard not to support businesses large and small that are owned by Bush supporters in our area. This isn't always easy, and is sometimes inconvenient.

I own a small business in Maine and could certainly use the support of DU members if I am going to be able to survive our current economy.
As a low poster, who has been a member for over a year, considering the larger issues facing us, I have felt reticent in bringing this up before. But in truth if we don't support each other, we might not be able to support the larger causes.

I took a sail on a ship like yours this summer in Traverse City, MI. Beautiful cruise, just my type of trip, a few hours on a sunny day with a gentle breeze blowing against your back. We went up and down the Old Mission Peninsula. Don't know if you're familiar, but a few pricey houses dot the shore, including that of the guy who started US Robotics.

Are you able to survive the winters okay?

You should start your own thread about supporting small DU member businesses for Christmases. We're from all 50 states here and then some. I love to know where to shop where it's most beneficial to the right causes!

We operate from Memorial day weekend until Columbus day weekend. We spend the winter doing many repairs, developing our ad and PR strategies, and my wife continues her profession as a nurse. I am aware of a couple of vessels in the Traverse City area but haven't been able to go there yet and see for myself.

my father works with sugar beet growers, and many of them are in Minnesota as well. His company - a co-op of growers set up a corporation to handle customer service, sales, quality management, and other such administrative functions for the five grower members - supports unions in the plants.
so, don't blame all sugar companies or growers, and don't boycott Crystal Sugar - according to choosetheblue, they went blue :)

37. Boycotting a certain food is crazy

Boycotting a corporation because they contribute to Republicans is one thing but boycotting a certain crop because it is from a red state is ridiculous. You have no idea how the people who grow that crop vote or contribute their money. For example, Louisiana is a red state and also a state that grows sugar. But a Democrat just won the runoff in the 3rd district where lots of sugar is grown.

I especially like the percentages because I've known for a long time that many companies give to both parties and without those percentages it would be tough figuring out where to go.

Of course, I try to use a lot of critieria in determining what/where to buy: things like ecological issues, human rights concerns, quality of merchandise, value for the price, etc. That could make for pretty difficult shopping procedures but, thankfully, most "blue" companies seem to hold good values about all those important issues!

I went to the Maytag store because we need a new dishwasher. As I was looking around, I noticed this display of free directories that looked like phone books near the door. I picked one up and started thumbing through it and realized it was a directory of "christian" businesses in our area. It creeped me out and sure enough on the choosetheblue site, Maytag gave 100% to republicans.

So, I won't be buying Maytag!!!! And I liked one of their dishwashers.
