Chimpus Khan's handlers. That jacket was no error, no fashion faux pas. It was cold and calulated to make a specific impression. To the right, he supports the troops, is with them every step of the way, and supports them fully. 11. Fashion sense for dictators

I once (long, long ago, children) had a history teacher who gave a mini lecture about the fashion sense of dictators. Now this was many a year ago and my memory isn't what it once was, but I'll do my best to recall his points.

According to him, it was the easiest way to tell the difference between a fascist regime and a communist one. The fascists go for a flashy look -- lots of medals and ribbons and gold braid in their dictator suits -- the point is to set them above those they rule. I believe his examples included Hitler. I think of Kim Jong Il in this fashion category.

In contrast, the communists go for a very basic look to reinforce that they are "of the people." Think of the Mao suit and Castro's fatigues.

So, in light of the points above, what does the "Member's Only President Jacket" say about Bush?

I didn't notice any flashy buttons or tassels, but I think it leans toward the fascist fashion statement. Playing dress-up seems to be more important to that camp -- and this wasn't his first costume party. And even though it was the color of the troops clothing and had a retro military cut, the "President of the United States" logo sets him about as far apart from regular troops as one can get.

Any other thoughts?

Do you think it was an intentional statement, a simple mistake of his handlers, or a slip?
