So it's official: The new gauntlet-throwing catch phrase from the right is "Merry Christmas" (can't you just see Eastwood saying it from behind the barrel of a gun?). Apparently, uttered in the right context—like on Fox News—those four syllables no longer convey simply holiday cheer, but a red-state/blue-state, my-god-is-better-than-yours challenge: I've got your "happy holidays" right here, buddy. This trend has been emerging all over the television dial: Last week on Scarborough Country, there was Pat Buchanan's distinctly testy-sounding "Merry Christmas" in answer to a guest from the American Atheists association who wished him a happy "winter solstice." And this week, there was George W. Bush's brief speech at the end of the Christmas in Washington variety special. (Throughout which I waited in vain for one politically correct, non-Christian number: Mandy Patinkin doing "Dreidl, Dreidl"? Queen Latifah rapping about Kwanzaa? C'mon, TNT, other religions can be cheesy too!) When the performances were through, Bush took the stage to thank the singers (who included LeAnn Rimes, American Idol 's Ruben Studdard, and the teen pop star JoJo) and remind the nation that the purpose of the season was to "remember the humble birth of our savior." Right, and to reach out to Americans of all faiths, in our country's great tradition of separation of church and … ? Mr. President? Are you finished already?

they tried to make us run from the word "liberal" (never worked on me, I have to say), they have attempted to co-opt the flag, being patriotic (which, when they do it, is actually nationalism) and now want to OWN Merry Christmas and use it politically?

honestly i couldn't care less about the hell the GOP is raising about 'the death of christmas and wholesomeness.' they have a spiked club up their yoohoos and can't enjoy anything in life if there isn't struggle, animosity, and bitterness. they can sit and spin on their ugly stick and yammer all day long for all i care.

i've been cured of christmas ages ago when i worked two retail jobs in toy stores during the pokemon craze. there is no joy in shopping for me in this season. i can't stand the music, i can't stand the greetings, i can't stand the decorations, i sure as hell can't stand the sappy movies; the only thing i can stand is some of the food and relaxing in front of a fire with quiet conversation. funny, whereas thanksgiving has arguments, christmas doesn't usually -- probably has to do with the potential threat of falling onto the yule log if they get too pissy. whatever. christmas is just another day to me, except it regularly produces cookies and crappy presents. huzzah, 'tis the season....

oh... i do like peppermint, i guess that's an upside. yes, peppermint saves christmas for me. just waiting for a 'nutty fundie' (doesn't that sound like a brownie :evilgrin:) to call a boycott on peppermint candies that don't exactly say "Merry Birth of Christ who was beaten to a bloody pulp ages ago to die for your sins, you ungrateful bastard, now convert or i'll splinter off and fly into your left eye."

11. And a joyous Yuletide to all...

I work in customer service, and every now and then I'm enjoined to have a "Blessed Day." I wish'em "Brightest Blessings" right back. If someone wishes me, an agnostic-pagan with Buddhist leanings (or Erisian, depending upon what day of the week it is) a Merry Christmas, I assume that my "have a nice day" is to be particularly enjoyed on Dec. 25th. If I hear "Happy Holidays" I go all the way. My MLK day kicks ass. I do Columbus Day up real special (it's Aleister Crowley's birthday, too, which gives me no end of exciting celebration ideas). It seems a weird thing to raise a fuss over. Although when one of my customers wished me a "bitchin' equinox", I totally dug it. The "in your face" Christian Xmas-ery this year is...quaint. If this is a happy time of years for Christians, why be cranky?
