Thom Hartmann was filling in for Randi Rhodes yesterday and read a piece which sounded like one of Ann Coulter's rants. It turned out to be a direct quote of Adolf Hitler, however, Hartmann substituted the word "liberal" for "Jew" and only told us he had done so after he was finished.

In my red state, in my red county, my city went blue and it's the third largest city in the state - and in a Republican strong-hold.

Now, the city isn't as large as the county, so the county went red by virtue of the rural vote, but we should keep this in mind when someone yells the North should ceceed from the South.

How are all these blue cities in the South supposed to do that?

They can't.

Locals say the lights always burn at Missouri's largest prison, a sprawling 210-acre complex on the outskirts of Bonne Terre. Scores of orange bulbs, mounted on tall poles, fire up the winter sky and can be seen for miles.
With enough power to turn night into day, the lights make the new Eastern Reception and Diagnostic Center as obvious a landmark as the towering 32-acre mound of lead-mine tailings left behind by the St. Joe lead company. The 2 million-ton dirt heap and a huge underground cavity are the old lead company's legacy to Bonne Terre. Today the abandoned mine, dubbed Billion Gallon Lake, is the world's largest freshwater diving resort, attracting notice from scuba magazines and National Geographic.

The acting superintendent of the empty prison doesn't know what will happen. Maybe Missouri, like other states, will be closing prisons within the next few years. Then again, inmate numbers could keep rising -- maybe the state will have to choose between building even more prisons or returning to the days when prisoners were shoehorned into every available cranny. Or lawmakers could reform sentencing laws and guarantee a reduction in inmates.

"I don't have to make those decisions," Jim Purkett says.

He looks relieved.

so when should I start shrieking? It was an interesting read, but full of sweeping generalizations, suspect comparisons (substitute "conservative" for "liberal" during the Mein Kampf piece, and you'll see a lot of things that you've heard right here on DU, and I don't see us herding repukes into camp any time soon) and implied conclusions (Milton Mayer's part describes the incremental ism that gets a society to a fascist state, but the fact that we may take 1 or 2 steps down this long path does not make it a foregone conclusion). It was certainly something to think about, but I wouldn't start marking the days off on my calendar just yet.

But let me ask you this. Who could have foreseen what has been done to this country by BushCo over the past four years? If, in the year 2000, anyone had predicted what the next four years would look like, he/she would have been called an alarmist lunatic.

Substituting the word "conservative" for "liberal" in "Mein Kampf" is a red herring. No liberal society (meaning thoughtful, progressive, enlightened, tolerant) could ever have produced Nazi Germany, or George Bush's America.

So choose your own time at which you start shrieking. My sincere hope is that you're right and I'm wrong. But should I proceed on that assumption?

That we need to keep an eye on these sort of things. Maybe I just misunderstood your "tone" in the original post. I took, probably mistakenly, what you said as a doom and gloom prediction that this inevitability will come to pass. As far as the red herring goes, I also agree that no liberal society could produce Nazi Germany, but that doesn't change the fact that some liberals have said many of the same things about conservatives that this passage implies that conservatives say about liberals. The fact is that it was a propaganda piece that used hyperbole and less-than-complete information to demonize another group. Yes the Conservatives do that to us a lot. We sometimes do that to them as well. This is a tactic that was around long before Hitler, but those who use it are not necessarily destined to become like him. My sincere hope is that I am right also, and don't let people like me discourage you from speaking out.

I found an interesting link to the notion of nonviolent resistance. I haven't read it in-depth yet, but there are some very intriguing things I've run across.

Oppression is nothing new-- since the beginning of Time it's been happening. People HAVE overcome it.

Here's a snippet:

When the Wehrmacht invaded Denmark in 1940, the Danes saw that military confrontation would change nothing except the number of Danes left to be occupied. The Danish government therefore adopted a policy of official co-operation (and unofficial obstruction) they called "negotiation under protest."

On the industrial front, Danish workers subtly slowed all production that would feed the German war machine, sometimes to a perfect standstill. On the cultural front, Danes engaged in the symbolic defiance of organizing mass celebrations of their own history and traditions.

For some reason the single hot spot in the Twin Cities was Oakdale a wooded community where VP Mondale ran his campaign for President. PGA golfers get treatment privately in South Africa that they cannot get here.

We know what genetically engineered super-bugs they have been messing with but we don't know the extent or who has access to them. These people who start wars for no reason, suicide biographers, torture and imprison with no due process. It makes sense that 17 biologists/geneticists died shortly after Bush was in office. Perhaps they were not easily controlled as the remaining ones are.

Or they may infect the other parties conventions. Just as we knew that they were going to start a war by their actions after the 2000 election we know they are going to do this to gain more control. We just don't know when and where yet and they don't have all the bodies to explain in the future.
