Me: I disagree with your premise. I know a lot of liberals who live in the Middle West and South. Some are white, some are black, some are Native Americans, some of mixed blood. I agree that I am rich-not in money, but in friends and in the ability to help others in need. I am a graduate of the University of Illinois, not exactly Ivy League, but a good school. Ann doesn't know me.

Of course, we don't yell and scream hatred, but go about our business, living our faith, working in peace and with tolerance with people of other faiths. As a student of history of India, and having first hand
experience growing up there, the truth is that beginning in the
9th century the muslim invaders in India have left behind a
history of unspeakable cruelty, massacres, and most of all
complete intolerance in respecting any other religion. India
remained under the brutal rule of these muslim invaders until
the 17th century when the muslim rulers were finally defeated
militarily by the maratha warlord Shivaji and forced conversions of millions of Indians to islam finally came to an end. Almost 95% of
all muslims currently in India can be traced to have been converted
from other religions. They are not the descendents of the Mongol and
Arab invaders.

I guess you are referring to her remark about tolerant Islam keeping a low profile and buttressing her argument by looking back at medieval Indian history. I will have to disagree with you.

The question and her remark was strictly in the context of the present. Bringing up medieval atrocities by Muslim rulers to support that point is disingenuous. You wouldn't bring up inquisition or the activities of Christian missionaries during the British rule in India to conclude that currently there are no tolerant and progressive elements in the whole Christian world, would you?

The relation between religion and politics has always been very complex. India is not an exception. All conversions in India were not forced. Hindu caste-ism created a large group of oppressed people some of them willingly converted to Islam. As a progressive liberal, I am sure you are familiar with India's Dalit movement and Dalit literature. If not, I will request you to look at Ambedkar's writings and some literature on the tyranny of Hindu caste system.

Even after conversions Indian Muslims did not become non-Indians overnight and did not engage in genocide of all Hindus. Islamic rulers ruled large parts of current India for hundreds of years. If all of them truly believed in "kill or convert", there wouldn't be a single Hindu or Buddhist left in the Indian subcontinent. India is 85% Hindu even today. I am not denying or condoning Islamic atrocities in any way, but extracting out religious motivations in any political struggle and war is tricky and generalizations are often wrong. Usually such over-simplifications and generalizations are used as tools for propaganda serving right-wing parties - BJP/Shiv Sena in India or Republicans here. We don't want to fall in those traps and give up the progress we have made in secular democracies like India and US.

The biggest obstacle to secular progressive political forces developing in middle east in the last century has been western world's need for cheap oil. The first thing such forces will do is to nationalize oil interest and use that money for middle eastern people. Those movements have always been crushed by UK/US military-industry complex because they hurt business of big oil companies. It has been cheaper and easier to maintain the "Arab facade" of "benevolent" dictators and sharing profits with them and investing the profits back in Wall Street. Those policies inevitably make people absolutely hopeless and they become easy targets for fundamentalists and terrorists. We won't find Ann Coulter talking about that, shall we?

In a way we need to play up the part about liberals including the rich and white, while getting rid of the rest of her nonsense. I know many affluent people who vote Republican thinking that the Democrats are the part of the poor (who want to take away their money) and minorities.

We need to get the word to these people that, while the poor and minorities are often Democrats, there are affluent people and whites who are also Democrats, and unless they got their money from inheritence or from being at the top of a big coorporation, the Republicans do not represent their interests. Democrats need to do a better job of showing that their policies are also better for the small businessmen and many others who are not really aided by Republican policies. Hey, even Donald Trump has said that the economy does better under the Democrats.

I was really surprised during the final month of the election that the many quotes from business leaders, such as Lee Iococa, who endorsed Kerry were not brought up to campaign counter to such misconceptions.
