1. Most major newspapers have forums

go to the paper's site, click on chat or comment or whatever, register, and you're set.

2. You are kidding right?

Most newspaper boards have "characters" who control the newsgroup. The best you can hope for is a fair moderator. And, most newspaper newsgroups are patronized by people who work for the newspaper. So it's not always a great cross section of the public.

10. Not in my experience

though limited to Boston Gazette, NYT, St Pete Times and The Guardian. No one seemed in control. Whether they are patronized by people who work for the newspaper or not, I cannot say. If they are, our press is much in the hands of the illiterati. All moderators were notable for their seeming absence. The only gripe I had was with one whose program prohibiting profanity was so rigid one could not write Bushite without it coming out Bus***e.

both are criminally conservative, but pretend to be open to all views.

4. not really...

I've abandoned three such boards in the past year...I was even a moderator on one and told "maybe I don't belong" because I warned republican members along with democratic members.

all three PRETENDED to be bilateral, but as the election approached, it became clear that even if the moderation team was not overwhelmingly conservative (and they all were), the republican shock troops set up continual attacks on liberal members that was never adequately addressed.

Even though I'm a little biased, I think even other more moderate republicans noted the trend and left or were thrown out. They started "eating their own" long before November, and brutally enforced conservative conformity among their own ranks....so having a worthwhile political discussion became futile.

good luck. If anyone finds one, let me know. I USED to enjoy debating the other side rationally, but these past two elections have rendered critical thinking a thoughtcrime among republicans.
