And the neo-cons will start to lose their grip on power? I think being a conservative in the form of Bush, DeLay, and Cheney is a big personality flaw, and I think by 2006 more people will realize that. There are already some cracks in the armor.

5. I'm not optimistic about the short term

I think the GOP will make gains in the senate (maybe 3 seats) and possibly pick up seats in the House as well in '06.

I have no idea what '08 will bring, as we have no idea what will happen over the next four years (no doubt the effects will be disasterous). Also much depends on who the GOP and the Dems nominate. I believe if we put Hillary up, we are doomed.

We can only hope that the people will wake up and see what is happening.

Of course another question is whether the voting machines are even legitimate in the first place. There is no way to tell for sure whether these results are correct.

Until all of that is corrected, I don't see liberals and progressives making much progress. But I do believe that in time, progressives and liberals will succede.

Other things such as Valerie Plame, detention and abuse of Muslim prisoners and suspected terrorists, violations of civil rights and the Bill of Rights, abuses of power (misappropriation of $750 million approved by Congress for Afghanistan but used by Bush for pre-Iraq war purposes without approval), firing and demoting people who placed truth to the public over loyalty to the president, and on and on. They've created a lot of enemies inside and outside government, and their manipulation of the press will come back to haunt them, as it did Nixon and his cronies.

it's difficult to say. FDR's New Deal and its descendants held sway for a good 30+ years. If the conservative ascendancy is tracked to 1980, with Reagan's election, 2012 would be comparable, but who can know ?

if the Dems would get out there and start yelling about every move they try. The Dems are being way too polite and quiet. Until that happens the right will stay in power and longer they take the harder it will get as they will get more and more entrenched.

had turned sometime in '04. Bush's rating has been below 50% for some time now.

On edit: I was never a Kerry fan (although I voted for him, useless as that was in Kansas) but I said for two years before the election that in a free, fair, and honest election, no matter who the nominee was, the Democrat should beat Bush easily.

The key words are free, fair, and honest plus election. Anyone who thinks those conditions prevailed is seriously delusional. Or a Republican.

Dems. in congress, were willing to speak up even if not to vote to overturn the Ohio electors. That was progress. Admittedly frustratingly small, but progress none the less.

There is a strong internet presence of leftist sentiment, and I think that influence will continue to grow.

People like us are no longer content to sit back and take it.

Things are changing. Yes, 99% of the media is controlled by the right wing, but I have a feeling that will change ever so slowly.

Finally, Bush's approval rating, even before inauguration, is below 50%. I don't think it's going up.
