I've gotten into a pissin contest with some fundies on another website. Does anyone have any good info that will make their heads explode?

Preferrably, I'm looking for anything factual about his DUI days or cocaine habit that people keep referring to. I have a group of fundie whiners either gonna get me banned from a site for Bush bashing or else turn me in to have me sent to the interrment camps, hehe. I'd like to tweak their angst before I go.

I've also found Liberals Like Christ and Jesus No Republican to be a lot of fun. The problem is, once a fundy sees the world "liberal," his mind goes into protest.

I'm an atheist, but I used to be a fundy. I've found that it's nearly impossible to reason with them because they don't use reason. Most of what they believe is based upon emotion and the main emotion is fear.

11. I worked out my ire on another forum and a bit on this one.

Most of my family are fundagelicals...ugh! I really think my mother may be religiously insane. :( It's scary. She decided I was demon-possessed.

Since I cut off family relations, I'm not as angry so I don't get as absorbed in websites / books like yours as I once would have been. I will read it, though.

I probably still know as much about the bible as any fundy. I went to a fundy school 2-12. There were bible classes every single day. Interestingly, most of the focus was on the Old Testament and Pauline Epistles. I learned about killing everyone who pisseth against the wall. I learned about killing little children who mock prophets. I learned about killing every single living thing in certain besieged cities in the "Promised Land." Sorry, but much of the OT is just plain SICK. No wonder the fundies are so bloodthirsty. Everytime I think about it, I get pissed that I was exposed to such things at such a young age...killing considered "holy." :mad:

That's what many are by definition.

Hours of repetitive instruction.
Learning by rote expected, even of the young.
Withdrawal, shunning of non-believers.
Threat of abandonment if you don't maintain belief.

Of course, some of those traits would fit just about ANY intention cluster of like-purposed humans....like say, Amway?

Religious groups just have generally had more time to perfect these things. And from those, some have seemed to aim for maximum exploitation of their believers.

Not to put down ALL religion.
But when it's bad? It leads to tragedy.

grace, but it's the liberal churches that REALLY emphasize what that is all about.

I try, _really_ hard, to find what is good in those people. And I often manage to do that. It helps me love them more and think of them less according to labels.

But that doesn't lessen my anger when I see them doing things to others that I think are harmful, whether it's supporting an unjust war, spiritually blackmailing the vulnerable, or trying to find excuses to NOT help the poor through the government.

3. Probably it won't matter what you say.

About 95% of fundies are locked into a certain mindset and questioning that mindset would mean questioning everything they believe in. Most fundies aren't that brave and in a way, I do feel sorry for them. If they question one little thing, their entire world view could end up crashing to the ground. That's what happened to me and it's very painful.

If they believe differently from other fundies, there's a good chance the other fundies will relentlessly try to reconvert them or even shun them. They could lose their family and friends. This is what happened to me, so at this point, I really don't have a support system.

You can lead a fundy to knowledge, but you can't make him think. :)

What I do is stick to the words of Jesus. Go through the gospels and find verses that confirm rich people are going to hell, that Jesus eschews money (render unto caesar; his anger at the money-changers), then calmly point out that by this description, George W. Bush is on his way to hell. You can also drag in that verse about "the least of these" and apply it to the tsunami situation. You can point out that * spent more on the war and doesn't really seem to care about "the least of these." Point out his cutting of programs. When they respond that it isn't the government's job to look after individuals, throw in that verse about judging nations...can't remember where that is.

They'll try OT law, but remember that Jesus said to obey the spirit, rather than the letter of the law. They'll try dragging in Pauline theology. That's a tough one to argue against, but it seems to me that Paul contradicts Jesus' teachings. You'll get nowhere with them on that because they believe every single word of the entire bible is inspired by God and that there are no contradictions.

I'm not sure what they will consider to be a contradiction because I see them all over the place. :shrug: You probably won't get them to admit there are contradictions even though contradictions are EVERYWHERE.

14. Gnosticism

How on earth(or elsewhere) can one emphatically interpret Scripture without either secret knowledge that Jesus objected to or better knowledge of the intended meaning of the writers and their immediate communities? Aren't a lot of their objections to catholic "abuses" focused on just such ignorant straying from what the words mean?

There is no need for secret knowledge that wars with critical archeology, linguistics, scholarship of many types to get on its high horse and seize ultimate pronouncements no other has ever dared to claim from Sacred Writ unless one were an abuse cultic nut interested really in making a new religion for their own leader and group that excludes all others.

Never getting to the underpinnings or the experience of real life or the mystery of God is the consummate skill of those who can best you in the quotation wars. It is religious sophistry for the unsophisticated where humility and ignorance can be interchangeably vices or virtues depending on the need to beat you and be right every time.

You might as well dispute politics and philosophy with a Libertarian. The only common ground with fanatics is that you breathe the same air and use the same words at times. They don't want your agreement. they want satisfaction and submission, truth be damned. A permanent arrested mental development clinging to false absolutism, which they won't allow to be compared to the Founder.

Here's an example of what I'm trying to combat.

I just have to shake my head at the massive stupidity of the other side. This comes from some of "Bush's Youth"
