Democrats Are United in Plans To Block Top Bush Initiatives


As President Bush prepares for his second term, Democrats in Washington and around the country are organizing for a year of confrontation and resistance, saying they are determined to block Bush's major initiatives and thereby deny him the mandate he has claimed from his reelection victory last November.

The Democrats' mood and posture represent a contrast to that of four years ago, after Bush's disputed victory over Al Gore. Then, despite anger and bitterness over how the 2000 election ended, Democrats were tentative and initially open to Bush's calls for bipartisan cooperation. Today, despite Bush's clear win over Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), Democrats across the ideological spectrum say they are united in their desire to fight.

Grass-roots Democrats feed the appetite to battle Bush, giving Democratic leaders in Washington more incentive to challenge the president. "I've been struck how funders and groups like MoveOn are very engaged and are not letting up at all," said Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg.

Four years ago, he said, Democrats pulled back, but this time there is pressure from the grass roots to continue the fight. "Democrats took a licking , but see themselves back in the battle," Greenberg said. "I don't think outside forces will allow Democrats to disengage."

16. Nope, I disagree...

I was born and raised 20 years in Las Vegas, and I can tell you that the county LV sit in is solidly Democratic. Conversely, it is also the fastest growing county in Nevada, and one of the fastest growing in the country. It has become increasingly more Democratic over the years, as the good ol' boy crew loses influence and likewise power. Senator Reid is well liked in Nevada, because he has always fought against the dumping of nuclear waste in the Yuka Mountains. There's a reason he been re-elected time-and-time again, and I am confident as a Nevadan that Harry Reid has plenty of friends who will back him before they take him down over a two-term chump ass chimp.

I know Clark County is very Democratic, and the (unsustainable) growth there will make Nevada blue sooner than later.

Harry stood up on Yucca Mountain, and I have recognized him for that on this board many times.

Even Washoe County is trending blue these days, so I'm a hopeful advocate for Dems in Nevada.

I'm just pointing out that Nevada went Bush in 2000 and 2004. That's a fact.

when i read your post, the following idea occurred to me ...

i think most of us are in agreement that Gonzalez should NOT be confirmed as AG ... no argument there ...

but the reality is that bush will keep nominating one nightmare after another ... suppose that we view this a little differently ... suppose that we vote against Gonzalez but let his nomination proceed ...

he seems very weak and inarticulate to me from what i saw during the hearings ... perhaps, since we're going to get stuck with a right-wing idealogue anyway, it might be more to our benefit to have an AG who has a shoddy record on torture-Gate and does not appear to handle the media very well ... he'll be much weaker and a much easier target to do battle with ...

incredulously, as in "whazzup with this".

Yet, it was said that the buzz in DC is that Congressional Dem's are focusing on the "agenda" coming from the White House and will block and amend as possible.

We have to make sure that we support them 100% because the fascist media and the right-wing scoundrels will stop at nothing to silence them. We all know that those bastards are going to come at our guys full force, and we have to make sure that we continue to lobby the media, and ALL members of Congress. Let both sides know that they are being watched closely, because the only reason that the Republicans are going this far is because they think all of America is asleep at the wheel. Likewise, our fellow progressives -- Democrats and Greens, etc... -- have been lax in their actions because they figured apathy had taken hold of the populace.
