January 11: On November 8, the American army launched its biggest ever assault on the Iraqi city of Falluja, considered a stronghold for rebel fighters. The US said the raid had been a huge success, killing 1,200 insurgents. Most of the city's 300,000 residents, meanwhile, had fled for their lives. What really happened in the siege of Falluja? In a joint investigation for the Guardian and Channel 4 News, Iraqi doctor Ali Fadhil compiled the first independent reports from the devastated city, where he found scores of unburied corpses, rabid dogs - and a dangerously embittered population. Here we present a selection of stills from the film.

1. winning the battle for hearts and minds...spreading de-MOCK-racy...

i have really tried to justify such destruction in the name of saving our troops and getting them the hell out of there.....but i find there is none.....war is never the right answer, and i have always known this. but if ever there was a way to not run a war/occupation the right way, we are writing a textbook on it in iraq.

"fuck iraq and every iraqi in it"...yeah...that does us a lot of good...

i am reasonably sure the troops didn't come to iraq thinking this way...instead, imho, it's the mindset of our current "leaders" that has been projected onto them.....the extended tours, the lack of armor, the broken promises, our misunderstanding of the most basic iraqi culture and history...it's all played a role in the situation we are in today. we are despised by the population and now stuck in a position of occupying army that we have never been properly trained for nor currently have the manpower to support.
